Doctors. Parents. Citizens. Employers. They're all ready for the cure to America's health care crisis: WHO KILLED HEALTH CARE? “ A brilliant analysis…a must read.”-Bill George, Professor, Harvard Business School and former CEO of Medtronic “As it becomes more and more obvious to everyone that our current health care system is unsustainable, this is the book that had to be written.”-Daniel H. Johnson, Jr., MD, former president of the American Medical Association “Regina Herzlinger's ideas to tackle the crisis of the U.S. health care system are based on a keen knowledge of the system's existing difficulties along with insights that introduce the reader to new streamlined choices that have the potential of getting both quality and cost under control.”-Joseph Kennedy, founder, chairman, and president, Citizens Energy Corporation, CEO, Citizens Health Care, former representative (D-Mass) “Regina Herzlinger...offers a vision of the way things can be, should be, and will be sooner or later. The only question is: how long do we have to wait?”-Greg Scandlen, founder, Consumers for Health Choices “Regi Herzlinger has brilliantly articulated a better way-embracing the principles of competition and innovation that cause every other sector of our economy to thrive.”-U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla), MD “Following on the heels of her landmark Market-Driven Health Care, Herzlinger lays it on the line with her exposé of what many who work in the health care industry have felt in their gut. Now it is articulated in an entertaining and must-read portrayal, with you and me as the only way out.”-Dennis White, executive vice president for strategic development, National Business Coalition on Health

Per the jacket flap, Professor Herzlinger (Harvard Business School) "has sat on the boards of directors of dozens of nonprofit and business health care organizations and has been a keynote lecturer at hundreds of meetings on health care." She is also plugged in politically, as attested to by the visits to the U.S. Congress and the White House mentioned in the introduction. So when the author talks about how the healthcare system works in this country, she can do so with some authority. As Herzlinger sees it, there is a war going on and "the wrong side" is winning. She ascribes blame to health insurers, general hospitals, employers (who provide insurance for their employees), Congress, and academics, in other words just about everyone involved with the healthcare industry except consumers and doctors. And in the acknowledgments section, she predicts that "because the status quo fights dirty and fights hard to protect its interests, this book will likely be smeared." (This prediction does not seem to be borne out by the reviews posted on Amazon, which are predominantly four and five stars.)There are indeed many pointed comments about firms, institutions, and people, which were probably not appreciated by those on the receiving end. Corners cut, actions taken based on self interest versus the welfare of consumers, over the top compensation packages, and the like. Herzlinger does not even spare her fellow academics, who are said to "favor schemes that give them considerable power over your money." In my view, this part of the analysis is well worth reading no matter what approach to healthcare reform one is inclined to favor. It is stated repeatedly that the healthcare system could benefit from more choices and competition, which leads to the conclusion that a government-run healthcare system (or "single payer") is not the solution and sets up the author's proposal for a "consumer-driven healthcare" system. But Herzlinger is no dyed-in-the wool conservative, for she also espouses universal healthcare and subscribes to the idea that individuals (not companies) should be required to maintain at least catastrophic healthcare insurance coverage (to be subsidized by the government as required).I am not sure the consumer choice and universal healthcare thrusts are compatible, although it would be nice if they were. That would be something for readers to ponder while following the argument. The issue is far from theoretical, for the healthcare legislation currently (10/21/09) under consideration would embrace greater government control as a means of reducing the number of Americans without healthcare insurance - an approach Professor Herzlinger seemingly warns against. On the other had, she praises the Massachusetts universal healthcare plan that was enacted in 2006 - which according to other sources has led to soaring healthcare costs, etc. - so it's not entirely clear how she would come out on the national legislation now under review. As for the author's own plan, there seem to be a few holes. For instance, I'm not convinced that establishing a new federal agency to function as "a health care SEC" would greatly improve the quality of information available on the performance of healthcare providers. Ask yourself why the SEC missed the Madoff scandal until it blew up in their face. Also, I don't see why the government should necessarily provide a tax subsidy for healthcare expenditures. Perhaps it would suffice to eliminate the current inequity in the tax law by taxing employees on the value of employer-provided healthcare coverage. In summary, this is an excellent analysis, but the solutions offered are no panacea.

Jack Morgan was a great guy and when he died, a lot of people mourned him. He could have lived another 20 years, but he died because of an inept, malfunctioning, costly healthcare system. Jack thought this system was protecting him, but it killed him.The hospitals, employers, managed care insurers, the Congress and executive branch, and health policy academics, all conspired, according to Dr. Regina Herzlinger, Harvard Business School Professor and accomplished author, to kill Jack and hundreds of thousands others, and to make enormous profits in the process. Her solution? Consumer-driven healthcare, more or less following the Swiss model. It would enable innovators who have great ideas about how to get more value for the money to enter the space and allow providers compete for Jack's business. It would encourage multiple revolutionary innovations in the supply of health care and result in significantly better and less expensive service.A truly innovative approach for radical improvement that can be accomplished incrementally and tremendously benefit all of us. Read it and think about wonderful possibilities!Yuval Lirov, Practicing Profitability - Billing Network Effect for Revenue Cycle Control in Healthcare Clinics and Chiropractic Offices: Collections, Audit Risk, SOAP Notes, Scheduling, Care Plans, and Coding

This consumer driven approach is so sensible and not dependent upon the creation of an overwhelming, ever enlarging bureaucracy, to sustain health care. By studying many of the current ills, this book proposes a system where participants involved in every stage of the medical process can compete in program and price against their direct competitors: insurance companies, doctors, technicians, equipment manufacturers, drug companies, home health providers, etc. The book doesn't answer every question. However, it promotes a plan for a free market society which is sensible. Too bad our elected representatives didn't have the courage or the wisdom to address problems in the way suggested in this book. The book becomes an afterthought in the face of the Federal behemoth that has been created. BUT, it offers sound ideas for future congressional consideration if we must make changes to the current plan...

This book was absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend it! Dr. Herzlinger does a remarkable job of explaining the complex (and inefficient) healthcare system that we currently have and clearly outlining the steps that need to be taken to fix it. Her ideas are simple, yet complex because they will revolutionize healthcare and take great steps towards the better care and coverage we all deserve.

Mason Jar Breakfasts: Quick And Easy Recipes For Breakfasts On The Go (Mason Jar Meals Book 1) by Amanda RossiBook starts out with other works by the author and a table of contents that is broken up by food groups.Intro about two breakfast and what this bbook is about.Info about mason jar meals. Like the list of things you should be using for your breakfast items. Each recipe starts with a title, summary of the dish and ingredients you will need. They are on the healthy side: low fat, low sodium, low sugar products. Also directions on how to make along with some nutritional information-not sure what servings size is: calories, protein, fat-NOT broken up into good or bad and carbs. NO sodium is mentioned either. There are no pictures.

This is the second book I have purchased from the writer. I am always rushed and as she says you look in the frig and don't see anything appealing. If you make one of the recipes the night before you can take breakfast with you and/or lunch. I made some salad jars from her other book and took them on a road trip. When we stop for the night we do not like to go out to eat. One of the quart jar and some crackers made an excellent light meal for us. She encourages you to make substitutions and to try making difference to her recipes.

I can't wait to try some of these recipes! The directions were clear and I enjoy the variety of recipes..I like how the author started with the, easiest recipes band then some more difficult ones. The only thing I wish the author would have including pictures for the recipes.RHONDA

Great ideas here. I love anything that shows me how to make my life easier.

Good

Great tasty breakfasts to take with you when you don't have time to sit and eat a regular breakfast. And it is fun to eat from a jar sometimes.

The recipes in this book are quick and easy to prep. I'm skeptical about the eggs and bacon in a jar, but I might try it.

I just remembered this book. Using for breakfasts in the park. So very nice and convenient to use. Also trying to avoid sugar and most recipes are great for that.

While much of the book isn't new to fans of Kevin Smith, I really enjoyed reading it. The over-all message is one of self-empowerment. Sure, it has all the profanity and vulgar humor you expect, but amid the F-bombs is a lot of heart. From the sentimental tribute to his late father to the encouragement he offers to anyone with a dream, this book has it all. I laughed, I cried, and I felt like it was a good friend giving me a pat on the back, and saying "Go for it." Smitty may not be Yoda, but he's got a damn good take on life. Trust me on this one, I lost my wife to Cancer last year, and I struggle daily to find motivation. Still I felt kind of pumped when I read this. Writing this review makes me want to read it again. If you aren't easily offended, this is a great read, and fans of Smith may not get a lot of new material, but they will enjoy it all the same.

As a 33 yr old male, I'm firmly in Kevin Smith's target demo. I consider myself a fan, albeit not a very active one. I did enjoy his early Miramax films, but I'm not a frequent consumer of his "brand." That said, after reading and fully enjoying this book, I soon will be a more active SModcast listener. To say that Mr. Kevin Smith has himself a way with words isn't doing him justice. You can tell this is a man who loves writing, and combing the truly clever with the sorta crude. He's a man who had to take control and pave his own way. He's rightfully genuinely happy with what he's accomplished, and has a lot of fun telling the story. Despite all this talent, Mr. Kevin Smith is still completely grounded and humble, and excited with sharing his experience and wisdom. The book is an always-interesting reflection on his life and career.

A fun read, as I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan. Some great stories I've never heard and some insight into the man behind the overcoat. There are just a few things that could have been skipped- the last few chapters honestly just seemed like material/ filler to get to a page count - . A multiple page list of his appearances over the previous year? A letter from his daughter and, I'm sure she's the love of his life, but A Lot about the wife that took you out of the flow. Oh, and a multiple page list of things that can be learned from Ferris Bueller's Day Off?A little less filler and more of the stories Kevin tells onstage would have been great.

Funny and insightful book from Kevin Smith. If you are already a fan of his movies or podcast you will love this book. I really enjoyed his stories of screening his movie Red State with Quentin Tarantino and Michael Parks, how Bruce Willis was not as fun as Kevin thought he would be to work with( Bruce's reputation for being a jerk to work with sure seems to be factual and not a myth) and how Seth Rogen turned him on to being productive while smoking weed. Entertaining, raunchy and inspirational book that is a quick and easy read.

Over the years I have learned to accept that I was a Jersey Gen Xer female adrift in the Askewniverse. I have always thought Kev was cute as Silent Bob... all thru this book, though, I read self-loathing regarding looks/weight. From the guy who dated Joey Lauren Adams back in the day when she was Finger Cuffs-cute. And then writing your wife tolerates your perversions and gave up so much to be Mrs. Kev. Sorry, but that's a big bag of s*** !!! She knew what path to follow. Doubt she'd go back to journalism without the Snoochie fanbase tailing her. Love every movie... book loses a star for wasting space on SModcast itinerary. And if you do make "Hit Somebody"... please no Bruce Willis , and be sure to include the WARREN ZEVON SONG of the same name. As a hockey fan... you know where the seed for that particular film idea came from. And thanks for sharing George Carlin stuff. Miss him so much! Much love to Red Bank... my great uncle is James Avati and my great grandparents were the artists on Spring Street.

I must confess -- I'm not a great fan of Kevin's movies, they all have flaws of one kind or another, some are good, others not so much (Cop Out) and he's never produced anything approaching Pulp Fiction (though Red State was an encouraging move in the right direction). But I LOVE KEVIN SMITH!If you've ever heard his podcasts or seen him interviewed at length, you know Smith is a genuinely funny, inventive, creative raconteur, a great storyteller, and somebody who is just literally bursting with fresh ideas and interesting takes on the world around him, comics, arts, you name it.And Kevin manages to bring all that and more to this book, which has a breezy conversational style that very much matches the Kevin Smith you hear on his podcasts. He also has some fantastic inside-Hollywood stories, including the trauma of working with Bruce Willis and a long account of his relationship with the Weinsteins. In short this is a fun account, at times very insightful, and otherwise highly entertaining -- good job Kevin!

This book clearly describes his rise as a filmmaker and businessman. Kevin tells you about his up's and down's in a very funny way. I found myself laughing aloud at the first few pages alone. There were about 2-3 chapters that I found drawn out. However, they were actually informative regarding the business side of filmmaking. Overall I found this book very, very, funny. It should be....that's what Kevin is. If you like the films Clerk's, Jay & Silent Bob, or even Comic Book Men on AMC you will like this book. I hope Kevin does a full movie about Comic Book Men or at least turns it into an hour-long show.

Adorable. This book is like a combination of Grandma wisdom of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without," and Project Runway (which is a combination that works better than it sounds). Who remembers The Elephant Show with Sharon, Lois and Bram? They performed a song this book reminded me of, where a coat became a jacket became a vest became a hat became a tie became a pocket became a button...you get the drift. Anyway, the sweet story and impossibly cute illustrations combine to make this something I hope my granddaughter will love, and a message I hope she'll embrace.

We have been reading this over and over again because the story is just so cute. The illustrations are nice. The tempo is very upbeat and catchy, and sounds very good when read aloud. The story itself is nice because not only does it talk about fashion, it addresses the idea of repurposing things. I also appreciate that although the main character is POC, the story isn’t about her race or racial struggle. The story also has repeated lines that are perfect for kids who like to read along with parents. This book makes for a great gift for children 3-6. If they like Fancy Nancy or anything fahshion or craft related, they will love this.

This is the cutest story. I got this for my 4-year old niece and she can’t get enough. She has read it with her mom several times since receiving it. She’s a little fashionista of color, and she loved seeing a brown girl like her on every page. Her mom told me she excitedly said, “mommy, she looks just like me!” That said, this is a universal story that will appeal to a range of ages.

This book is so sweet for so many reasons - first and foremost, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. My 7 year old traces the whimsical pictures with her fingers as we read. The story is equally sweet, showing a girl can repurpose and reuse one of her favorite things, her pretty pink dress, and her mother teaches her how to get crafty and think creatively. My girls ask for this book every night, definitely one of our absolute favorites.

I loved this book. Sweet story, beautiful illustrations! My little sister (10) couldn't stop looking at it. I really appreciated the opportunity to give my sister a book about a girl who looks like her without the theme of the book having anything to do with race. Really refreshing and cute!

We read this book every night - my daughter loves it! Very cute. It's about a little girl who upcycles a favorite dress of hers. My daughter is 3 and when I say she is obsessed with this book - I mean it!

Got this for our nursery... but my 3 year old daughter loves dresses. This story really spoke to her and she loved all the colorful, fun pictures. It gave us both a lot to think about when it comes to recycling our clothing. Definitely recommend for lots of ages.

This has become my five year old daughter's favorite book. She quotes from it often ("making molehills out of mountains", etc.) and it's honestly become a source of inspiration to her in terms of creativity and problem solving. I really can't recommend it enough. I even find myself tearing up at the end when I read it aloud because the underlying theme is about a child growing up and ever-changing.
