To be perfectly honest, I ordered this book as soon as it was announced, then waited months while it was being made. In that time I developed a thought that it requires some serious nerve for any photographer to publish a book titled "the Iconic Photographs" while still alive.When the book arrived I was somewhat consumed with the idea of how can anyone possible declare his own images to be iconic. Well, I stand corrected, Steve McCurry have delivered a fantastic collection of images, well worthy of the Iconic Photographs label.The book is filled with images reflecting on images rather than religious obsession with technical data, and I am impressed to see Steve have included images where focus or exposure may not be "technically entirely accurate" however the images, the moment and the composition simply are so strong and magnificent that discussing technical data is meaningless. On a related note, the book show images captured with everything from film to high-end 24+megapix cameras, and a historical progression clearly showing the fingerprints of some of the earlier digital slr cameras, but through this Steve McCurry carries the same tone and look. To me this is a iconic book for the reason that it is about images, magnificent images.For a moment forget the price of this book, and simply enjoy the sheer magnificence of a huge book of photography. Each page another outstanding moment captured and printed.I am completely delighted with this book. and yes, Steve you are forgiven for declaring your work iconic. it IS.!

I'll try not to repeat what other reviewers have said or what the product is described as by the manufacturer. Regarding the version I received from Amazon: the cover sheath that the book comes in is black unlike the pink one in the photograph. The book is bound in blue silk (like the product photo). The signed print is well placed inside the front cover of the book. The reproduction is superb and the paper is exceptionally thick. The publisher, Phaidon, could have done a better job in packing the product in a larger shipping box, but mine arrived with no real damage to speak of.It's a marvelous collection of McCurry's career thus far. The prints are so big at times you feel as if you are right behind the camera taking the photo with McCurry. Most photo books don't give you that sensation as the prints are often less than half the size of the ones found here. It's not as big as Helmet Newton's "SUMO" (full size version) or other offerings from Tachen like "GOAT", but in some ways it's better because it's big but not too big. Unlike some other massive photo books, you can sit down in a chair and leaf through it or lay it on a table or even the floor, which ever suits you best.The fact that only 3300 of these books have been made and that it is signed by McCurry make it an obvious collectors item. It's worth it.

The eye on this man is tremendous, and the skill of the editor in putting together this volume of work is stupendous. WELL worth the money for some of Steve McCurry's gorgeous photographs. The double page spreads in this oversized book... you can pour over every inch forever. I'm delighted with this purchase, let me tell you. If you like McCurry's work, this one is a must have.

This book contains beautiful reproductions of some of the best of McCurry's amazing portfolio. The photos are well chosen, and the print work is top notch. You should be aware that even by photo book standards, this is a HUGE book - 15 inches tall - but all of that space does lend itself to extraordinary detail in the photos. Some of the photos are split across the fold, but the quality of the binding is such that its actually not too distracting.Steve McCurry is deservedly one of the world's most acclaimed photographers and after viewing this book, you'll be in no doubt as to why.

I’m so in love with this book. I used to rotate my coffee table books but I get so many complements on this one and it is visually stunning to look at so it just stay on my table and I open it to a different page every week

Its very well built and very elegant from outside and inside. Is not massive but its a big book with such a beautiful cover. As you can see on the description it does have a large number of photographs yet it doesn't contain All of Mccurry's greats, at least to my opinion.I do have one small complaint, some photographs came with little white dots of what I think is residue of paper, cleaning the pages is not that easy, one needs to be careful not to scratch the photographs since those particules or dots are kinda stuck.

No point trying to talk about the images. Wise decision to just print them without captions or anything else next to them, not even page numbers.There's probably no point either in adding to the chorus of complaints about pictures ruined by splitting them on two pages-- I just can't help it... Some images survive it, most don't. At least have someone with a brain pick them! Suffice to say some of the thumbnails at the end look better than the two-page spread.Still, beautiful photographs. Even if you also have McCurry's Portraits or similar, don't even think about it! It's well worth it. I bet the other photographs wish he never met *that* girl :)

I purchased this as a gift for my bf who is a photographer and huge fan of Steve McCurry's. He absolutely loved it, the book is HUGE, and the photographs are breathtaking. Really great collector's item as it is signed and only a limited number of copies made. I got this for an AMAZING deal since one day it was listed for a quarter of the retail price, brand new... don't know how that happened. Such a great photobook It's worth it even at full price.

Like so many of the other reviewers, I started out loving this book, but then...Let me say first that I LOVE books that tell two stories, one in the past and one in the present. One of my all-time favorites is Daphne DuMaurier's House on the Strand. When I discovered the same technique being used by Susanna Kearsley, I read every one of her books. (Kearsley's books are frequently compared to the Outlander series, but in my opinion, Kearsley's books are WAY better.) When I saw a review for one of Kearsley's books mention that it was 'reminiscent of Lady of Hay', I naturally decided to check it out for myself.First, the cons: It really is too long. The last third of the book becomes a bit disjointed as the story line jumps between the past and the present more and more frequently. I found myself going from a state of suspense to find out what happens in the story to a state of boredom, hoping the author would just get on with it.Certain aspects are simply not credible. NOBODY who is terrified of anyone or anything could possibly forget to bolt their door as many times as the main character. And when the main character needs a distraction, it's a little too much of a coincidence that she is given an unrelated assignment that puts her in immediate contact with another individual who happens to have experience with hypnosis and past life regressions. I also sincerely doubt that anyone who is terrified of someone could allow that individual to repeatedly hypnotize her involuntarily - the last time just by saying a sentence or two over the phone. Again, when she heard the villain's voice - why did she not just hang up?Finally - and these are small points - having read a LOT about this period in history and some of the main players, I find it extremely unlikely that King John ever had cause to question the loyalty of William Marshall, as he briefly does when pursuing Matilda in Ireland. William served John (after having served all of his older brothers and his father as well if memory serves) and was granted the regency when John died with no heir, and nearly a millennium later, William is still known for his integrity. (Read Elizabeth Chadwick's The Greatest Knight.) Of course, John may have questioned the loyalty of those around him with or without just cause - because he was not a likable guy (to say the least). Also, in the Epilogue, the author gives two reasons as to why William De Braose may have fallen from King John's good graces, but fails to site one of the main reasons which I had heard proposed - that William was a witness to the murder of John's nephew Prince Arthur.Now the Pros: if you can overlook the above-mentioned issues, the story is well formed. It managed to hold my interest in spite of the literary and historical meandering that takes place in the latter part of the book. I enjoyed the story in general, the author's style, and the history portrayed in the book. The descriptions of places and scenery in particular were very evocative.One final comment: a number of reviewers commented on how "dated" the book is, as it is set in the 1980s. A number of reviewers commented on the fact that perhaps the main character's behavior (she repeatedly returns to someone who is abusing her) can be excused because of the time period in which the book was written. That one puzzled me. In spite of the fact that the "no means no" mentality was not apparent in the latter part of the last century as it is today, it is pretty common knowledge that people do return to their abusers, so the idea that this story could not take place with a "modern, liberated woman" was sort of preposterous. Other reviewers commented that the use of alcohol and drugs was ‘so 1980s’. Wow…I guess these folks are unaware of the opioid abuse epidemic in this country today if they think such substance abuse is ‘dated’.I will definitely read more books by this author, but I may pay closer attention to the reviews before I choose.

Barbara Erskine's novel LADY OF HAY, in part an historical novel about Maud (or Matilda) de Braose, who had the misfortune of living during the time of King John the Bad (1199-1216), is one of those novels with parallel plotlines.In 1970s England, we meet 19-year-old Jo Clifford, who has an amazing ability as a subject in a regression hypnosis, when she relives the last, tortured moments of a 13th-century Norman-French woman, whose husband held a great deal of power in the Welsh Marches during the reign of Henry II (1154-1189), and his sons Richard the Lionheart (1189-1199) and King John.The modern story then jumps 15 years, and we meet 35-year-old Jo Clifford, successful journalist, and as hard-headed as you expect a modern woman to be. She is given an assignment to investigate regression hypnosis, which is a technique that claims to access a person's memory of a past life. Jo initially pooh-poohs the idea, until she becomes a subject herself.At that point, the medieval story takes off.I am not alone in finding the medieval story more compelling, primarily because the stakes are so high, giving Ms. Erskine opportunities for building a spine of tension to hold up the story arc.The modern part of the story was not interesting. The relationship between Jo Clifford and her on-again, off-again boyfriend Nick went round, and around, and around, and while true to life, this spinning of wheels meant that many opportunities for tension were lost.Nick's brother Sam is cast as the mad scientist, and as a former scientist myself, I wish that Ms. Erskine had eschewed the cliches and dug deeper to have formed a more interesting character. Sam's motivation is not clear, except that he seems to have gone quite mad for no apparent reason. My question was how did we get from the concerned young man we glimpsed in 1970, to the out-of-control sadist in 1985? No satisfactory answer is given.The modern story deserves 3 stars, the medieval story deserves 5 stars, so I am giving this novel 4 stars.

I’ve been following Sean Shapiro since he was writing for the Dallas Stars on NHL.com for the 2016-17 season. I read pretty much every article he published. I was an active reader on his Wrong Side of the Red Line(which is now a podcast) website until he moved over his full time gig the Athletic, which I fully reccomend purchasing a 1 year subscription. Sean’s writing is so in-depth and full of enlightenment, the work and effort put into any type of writing that he produces is truly appreciated from this fan.This book here has it all. From the beginning of the Dallas Stars franchise to its present. It covers every moving piece that made the Dallas Stars to where they are now. It has pages explaining the old famous faces like Norm Green, Jim Lites, Mike Modano, Sergei Zubov, Ken Hitchcock, Jere Lehtinen... players and personnel that I loved growing up and watching capturing that ultimate championship—the Stanley Cup. It has pages that covers the new faces of the franchise like Jamie Benn and his Art Ross Trophy capture. Acquiring Tyler Seguin in Jim Nill’s blockbuster trade and he is now cemented for 8 more years with the Dallas Stars and claims Dallas is home. Jordie Benn also has a couple pages, which I think is great. The dynamic duo of Ralph and Razor has a few pages for them(Stars fans are blessed to have amazing commentary, been really enjoying Josh Bogorad as play-by-play). It has so many pieces from the Dallas Stars family and I’m so proud to own this book. Sean makes being a hockey fan much more enjoyable.Can’t wait to get this bad boy signed when I travel to Dallas for a game. Thanks for reading!

Sean Shapiro is not only the best professional sports writer who covers the Dallas Stars, he's arguably one of the best NHL writers period. In this book, Sean does an excellent job of touching upon all of the franchise moments Stars' fans know about, such as the trade for Joe Nieuwendyk and the infamous "skate in the crease" goal, as well as the not so well known, such as the (almost as infamous) "Mooterus" jerseys. Even as a lifelong Stars fan, I learned new things reading this book (who knew Mike Modano had his own beer?) and in all likelihood, you will too.

Sean does a great job of telling the history of the North Stars/Stars in this book. If you’re a Stars fan or if there’s anything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Stars this is the book to read! Highly recommend!

This was a good book and humorous too. A true must for any Stars fan! Most Stars players and personnel are covered, as well as highllghts.

I read this out loud to my husband on a road trip, and we both loved it! My husband is a big Stars fan, and I am learning :)
