Nothing Like It in the WorldStephen E. Ambrose was trained as an 19th century American historian and has written many history books that were best-sellers. The ‘Acknowledgments’ list the people who helped and tells about a ride on a steam locomotive. This 2000 book of 431 pages has a ‘Contents’, ‘Introduction’, seventeen chapters, ‘Epilogue’, ‘Notes’, ‘Bibliography’, ‘Index’, and ‘Maps’. The Transcontinental Railroad reduced the time to travel across the country from six months to six days. It made modern America and was built with muscle power, hand labor. This well-written book is educational and entertaining; did you know that Abraham Lincoln was a railroad lawyer? Lincoln argued for a state law that exempted the Illinois Central from county taxes. He argued to allow bridges to be built over a river to allow travel from East to West. A railroad would mean new farms and towns, increasing land values. It would allow cheaper transportation to California.Only the government had the resources to finance the project. Businessmen in Sacramento invested to build the Central Pacific Railroad. Leland Stanford was elected as the Republican governor of California. The Union Pacific Railroad was authorized by the 1862 Pacific Railroad Act, a national charter. The UP and CP became the biggest businesses in America. There were changes to increase income for construction costs. The CP built the railroad from Sacramento to the east, the UP built the railroad from Omaha to the west; they met in Utah. A century later Interstate 80 would follow the same route. Tunnels through granite mountains were required, this had never been done before. The iron rails split the Great Plains buffalo herd (buffalo would not cross the tracks). The Indians attacked railroad men who had to defend themselves with rifles. Chapter 8 describes the life of the workers on the UP; most were young men.The UP wants to build past the California-Nevada border (Chapter 9). A wet winter compounded problems. One place in the Sierras has the most snow in the 48 states. The weather slowed construction, so too Indian raiding parties (Chapter 10). Portable towns, “Hell on Wheels”, followed the construction crews. Traveling was dangerous due to Indian attacks. Nitroglycerin was better in blasting tunnels through granite than black powder. The lower costs in transporting goods justified government subsidies (Chapter 12). The value of public lands increased. The railroad reached Utah (Chapter 13). The grasshopper plague released men for labor. Frozen ground delayed work. Snowsheds were needed in Nevada to keep snow off the tracks (Chapter 14). A magazine reported on the financial working of Credit Mobilier (Chapter 15). The CP had a similar business, the Contract and Finance Company. The worst storm in memory halted movement on the UP. Construction work continued. Money problems continued (Chapter 16). A shortage of supplies affected construction. In one day the CP laid ten miles of track. Once the railroad was complete the workers were discharged. The Transcontinental Railroad was completed in May 8-10, 1869 (Chapter 17). Many of the workers were owed months of pay. There were celebrations around the nation. Traveling across the country took a week (‘Epilogue’). Freight rates were quite lower, the telegraph sped messages. These made modern America possible. In 1872 the Credit Mobilier Scandal was revealed. The land grants provided transportation ahead of settlement. The bonds were paid back. The last pages tell about the future of the businessmen. The building of the US Highway System in the 1950s was followed by a decline in the railroads. The corporations of Big Oil conquered the railroads. People now travel by airplane across the country in hours not days. I think it takes four long days to cross the country by automobile.

My son loves these books. They got my reluctant reader to devour books.

Love the Zack Zombie -Pixel Kid series of Minecraft stories more than any other out there. They are fun, hilarious, and carry a gentle social message about how to handle certain situations in life. They have a lot of heart.

My sons are OBSESSED with Minecraft. This was an enjoyable book for them both. They’re 8 and 4.

My 7 year old love it. Needs a little bit of help with some of the words, but over all fun book for a minecraft lover.

I liked this but wasn't as good as the first one because of the ender Dragon cannot come out of an end portal , it's just not realistic.

The first and second was totally off the charts best books ever!Still waiting for the third book, happy reading
