I bought this book to study together with my 18 year old son. Overall, the book is more for fathers than for a father and son to study together. Nonetheless, the first part of the book did provide some good topics for discussion. The final section of the book is definitely directed at helping fathers raise their sons. Batterson states that we must "Commission your son with a Discipleship Covenant and give him a Rite of Passage." Failing to follow this process will "exile" your son "to no man's land." Yeah, I don't think so. Batterson also sets the bar high, but not always in a good way. His discipleship programs and rites of passages concluded with trips to Mach Picchu, Yosemite, rafting the Colorado River, hiking the Grand Canyon, doing a triathlon and going to the Galapagos Islands. Trips he mentions on multiple occasions in the book. To me, these aren't exactly the types of trips most dads would have the time or financial means to accomplish - but at least now they have something else to feel guilty about. I still have three chapters to go - which I may or may not read. There are times Batterson seems to ramble in order to fill pages. Again, it's not a bad book. But I would only recommend it, with some hesitation, to fathers with younger sons.

Every man should MAN UP and read this!Play The Man is the kind of book you read and think to yourself, I wish I had read this a long time ago. Mark Batterson takes the time to lay the foundation of what it look like to come the man God created you to be. With Mark's own style of communication, at every turn the reader is challenged to Play The Man!Building upon the seven virtues of a Godly man (Tough Love, Childlike Wonder, Will Power, Raw Passion, True Grit, Clear Vision, and Moral Courage), Batterson captures the essence of what it means to not just be a man's man, but to be God's man.For any man who reads this book, the potential of becoming the man your wife longs for, the man your church needs, the kind of man your community would be proud to have, and the father your kids deserve, is made real and attainable.Sir, READ THIS BOOK! PLAY THE MAN!

Mark Batterson continues to deliver impactful and inspiring wisdom through his books. Play the Man is what I believe to be the culmination of a well-read, well-prayed, and well-gifted Pastor whose love for families resonates through each story he shares.Masculinity is under attack because it has been so poorly represented in our culture. Mark does a masterful job of drawing the true nature God intended men to exhibit as we raise another generation of men and continue to perpetuate the essentials of manhood. Mark clearly and cleverly details 7 powerful values that will prove to be the catalyst for raising this next generation of godly Christian men by embracing these timeless yet timely truths.Thankful men like Mark Batterson are still putting into print these truths for us. By the time I was done reading this book I feel I owe my grand children a rite of passage and I pray my son will allow me to partner with him as we walk the journey to manhood together despite the fact he's grown with children of his own. While I can't change the past, I can help them carve a brighter, stronger, and more courageous future and Mark has provided the manual on how to make that a reality.Play the Man is destined to be a classic. I look forward to the accompanying resources and series materials in the near future so I can share this with our men this coming Father's Day. God Bless Mark Batterson for writing this book!

Where did we lose sight of what it means to be a man?As we look around society it’s increasingly obvious that we have lost our way. Men seem to have neglected their responsibilities to teach the next generation of men, leaving boys trying to figure things out for themselves or follow their peers. Adding to the mayhem, more and more kids are growing without a dad (or in some cases even a father figure) to teach them what they need to know, or have someone to cheer them on or coach them. No wonder men in our society are confused and lost when it comes to their roles in society.Mark Batterson arrives with a great book ‘Play the Man‘ to address the issue and start to look at really practice ways to attack this head on. Mark Batterson is the New York Times bestselling author who’s works include The Circle Maker and The Grave Robber, and Pastor of the multi site National Community Church in Washington DC.A book, for men?“Is it a picture book?” I hear you shout from the cheap seats.Okay… men aren’t renowned for their reading skills, in fact it’s something that Mark himself even addresses in his book.“According to the Pew Research Institute, half of adults read fewer than five books per year. Men read 13 percent fewer books than women”I’ve been an admirer of Mark’s writing for years and the main reason is simple ‘readability’ – it’s easy to read. It’s obvious that Mark is well read as he has a real knack of taking a tale and twisting it full of intrigue and natural logic. To this he adds a dash of science and pinch of history.Batterson is the the author for men who want substance, don’t want to read the Encyclopedia Britannica and still want to learn. In ‘Play the Man’ Mark uncovers what he calls the seven virtues of Manhood. The six virtues of Manhood in the book are:Tough love (sacrificing yourself for others)Childlike wonder (never losing your desire to learn about God’s world)Will power (that sanctified stubborn streak)Raw passion (an infectious enthusiasm)True grit (the combination of passion and perseverance)Clear vision (knowing what you’re fighting for)In ‘Play the Man‘ Mark is able to use his natural storytelling ability to share an anecdote about manhood, the good the bad and the ugly. However the thing that makes this book great is his ability to be able to couple that together with the scriptures, and give really practical ways to teach this to the next generation of men.Let’s be honest, men are really great at avoidance and I wonder if we have lost our way a little because of it? Men are living in some weird void where it seem like we have become the joke of the party. I think it was Scottish comedian Billy Connolly who said “Middle aged white males are the only people you can make fun of without being told off” and he’s right to a point. Men are living in a no mans land where manhood is skewed. The subtitle of ‘Play the Man’ is ‘Becoming the Man God created you to be’.This is more than just a book, it’s a manual for manhood. Imagine if this is shared, developed locally, put into practice and focused on, it could be the start of a manhood revolution that could change the world. The revolution starts at home, in our families and in our communities. Are you willing to ‘Play the Man’?Viva La Revolution

Robert Bringhurst is a poet, typographer, linguist, critic, designer, translator, teacher, and cultural historian. He has published more than thirty books, eighteen of them books of poetry. His book, The Black Canoe, a study of Bill Reid’s sculpture, is a classic of Native American art history and his book The Elements of Typographic Style is considered the “bible” for typographers the world over. In Canada, Bringhurst is best known for his groundbreaking study of Native Canadian oral literature, A Story As Sharp as a Knife: The Classical Haida Mythtellers and Their World (1999), a work that startled many readers and sparked intense academic and public debate. Two volumes of translation from classical Haida complete the trilogy: Nine Visits to the Mythworld and Being In Being. In 2004, the trilogy earned Bringhurst the Edward Sapir Prize, awarded by the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. Among his more recent books of poetry is Ursa Major (2003), a multilingual work in which characters tell simultaneous stories in English, Latin, Greek, and Cree.Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Robert Bringhurst was brought to Canada at the age of five, raised largely in Alberta, and has lived and worked in British Columbia since 1973. 10/12 Minion on laid paper that is more transparent than it should be was not a great choice. This is the first book in a long while to make me go hunting for reading glasses. The transparency of the paper, the watermark lines, and the general layout combine to create strange variations in contrast that make reading difficult.Bringhurst says (on page 195) that "The type cannot be chosen without coming to some decision about the kind of paper it will be printed on, and cannot look right in the end if that decision is later betrayed." His example is about proportions, but transparency and style ask similar questions. Perhaps he was betrayed in this printing? The book is mostly great, despite a strange lack of history around spaces and punctuation, and occasional hectoring, but an unreadable typography book is a sad thing. (I have version 4.2 (2016).)

Probably the best book on typography and layout ever written. Although highly technical in places, this book's rich content offers material that will be valued by professionals and laypeople alike. The discussion of fonts and spacing is extensive, but the book also offers in-depth analyses of the formatting issues central to the creation of nearly every book.Provided, of course, that readers take time to absorb what Bringhurst offers and skip those parts that don't work for them (which should generally be the case for any book but is especially pertinent for this title). For instance, Bringhurst goes into exhausting detail about perfect proportion, thirds, sixths, and ninths, as well as harmonics, all of which may be Greek (or choose other suitable language) to many readers, while also offering diagrams and illustrations showing the "smoothness" or "disorder" of various layouts. The latter elements should connect with readers emotionally even if the geometric discussion comes up short.Bringhurst's approach is highly technical but also esoteric—he may comment on the tiniest details of a descender for a specific font based on mathematical proportion, then launch into a completely subjective analysis of said descender's emotional impact on readers. Because of this style, many readers may find portions of the text dull or overly abstract; the good news is that, also owing to this nonlinear style, you can just skip forward until you find something interesting, without any loss of continuity. For instance, The font section, with images and detailed descriptions of dozens of oft-used (and some not-so-oft-used) fonts, is a tremendous reference when one is searching for a font for a specific purpose such as page-count reduction or extensive glyphs.Bringhurst is a genius, and in spots he conveys information about layout and formatting that at first appears paradoxical or at odds with conventional thinking. In other places, as noted by another reviewer, he appears to suffer from the typical inability of geniuses to convey content to a broader audience. Despite that flaw, I considered much of that content to be a bonus because of its mere presence in the book, and for that reason I gave it five stars. Nothing else out there comes even close. And yes, the book itself is laid out perfectly. All in all, what this book lacks in readability it makes up for with the extensiveness of its content, providing information that can be used both by professionals and by those with no preexisting knowledge of typography.

Some years ago, when PageMaker was the gold standard of computer page layout, I knew something about typography. Or I thought I did. When, in preparation for putting my own writings out in book form, I revisited typefaces and all related matters, I realized I had known little and now knew less. But after reading this book, I am, if not fully informed, much better informed, and ready to give the world my golden thoughts in the form of paper and ink! This book concisely, but completely, covers all relevant topics. The writing is superb. The illustrations are cogent, helpful, and extremely well done. No attempt is made to claim that aesthetic choices are relative. Specific guidelines and rules are provided, along with crisp statements of their rationales. Examples of all key typefaces are provided, precisely and helpfully organized. International symbols and characters are covered. I cannot think of any relevant topic that is not completely covered. You don’t need to read this book cover-to-cover, though I did. You can easily get from it some narrow bit of information critical to your needs. Or you can use it to generally educate yourself. Or, like me, you can get a grasp of options and choices you need to make if you want to present your writings the best way possible. Unless you are a total philistine, you can’t go wrong buying this book.

This is a book that really helped pique my interest in typography back when the first edition was published. I was actually looking to buy Bringhurst's forthcoming book about Palatino, but did not find it on the Amazon site. This was a first for me. Not finding anything on Amazon. I was able to order the Bringhurst book directly from the Book Club of California. I liked Elements enough that when I noticed the forthcoming title, I looked to buy it. Robert Bringhurst is also a published poet, by the way. I find that writers with strong backgrounds in poetry tend to write well and seem to love words and type as much as I do. I bought this 20th anniversary edition to back up my wearing out early edition.

Review

"Susan Page has given us an insightful and engaging portrait of a remarkable American. Wife to one President, mother to another, Barbara Bush was fascinating and complicated, and this absorbing biography brings the woman George H.W. Bush called 'the Silver Fox' to vivid life."―Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush"Formidable and fearless, candid and sharp, Barbara Bush was among the most interesting people of our time. Susan Page's intimate biography covers both the triumphs and tribulations that made her so fascinating and beloved."―Walter Isaacson, Pulitzer Prize finalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci, Steve Jobs, and Einstein"What a fascinating read! By giving Page access to her diaries and agreeing to long interviews, Barbara Bush finally reveals the person behind the pearls. And she turns out to be one of the most interesting and influential women of the twentieth century."―Cokie Roberts, New York Times bestselling author of Ladies of Liberty and political commentator for NPR and ABC News"Except for Eleanor Roosevelt, first-rate biographies of First Ladies are rare. Susan Page's volume on Barbara Bush is an impressive exception. It is a beautifully written and informative study of not only Barbara Bush, but also the presidential administrations of her husband and son."―Robert Dallek, Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestselling author of An Unfinished Life: John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963"Barbara Bush was the wife of one president and the mother of another, but as Susan Page shows, was far more interesting than that. In the nick of time, Page managed to interview Mrs. Bush at length, gain access to her diaries, and acquire other information that many earlier authors did not have in order to bring us this highly readable portrait, which expands our understanding of this strong, decisive woman, whose influence spanned an era."―Michael Beschloss, New York Times bestselling author of Presidents of War

I've never particularly been a fan of Barbara Pierce Bush. She has always struck me as a woman with a waspish tongue and a rather prickly personality. I knew her adulthood had been shaped by the death of a daughter at the age of three from leukemia and from her long-term marriage to George Bush. But I was anxious to read Susan Page's new biography, "The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty." The book is very good and I've learned a bit about Mrs Bush that I didn't know before. There were three or four parts of Mrs Bush's life I thought were interesting and well-explored in Susan Page's book. One is the illness and death of young Robin Bush in the early 1950's, six months after having been diagnosed with childhood leukemia. Much has been made of the fact that George and Barbara played a round of golf after Robin died. But the truth was that both Bushes had spent months at Robin's bedside, nursing her though her treatments, and helping her along. Barbara Bush made one rule and that was no one could cry around Robin. The round of golf was a release needed by both grieving parents. And, of course, there was very little support for young George W in his grief over losing his sister, which is a whole other book.I also didn't realise that Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan hated each other. Both women were famous for protecting their husbands and Reagan was reacting to the somewhat vicious 1980 primary where George Bush ran against Ronald Reagan. Nancy was vile in her cold relations with the Bushes, leading to a final blow-up between the two women after Bush left office.Susan Page selected several other themes in Barbara Bush's life to explore in detail. She tells about George Bush's affair - or was it an affair? - with his aide Jennifer Fitzgerald, who was sort of around for a longish period in the 1980's. Whatever the relationship was, George Bush did little to clean up the situation, even knowing about his wife's distress. But Page writes movingly about Barbara Bush's period of depression in the 1980's. It was deep and it was dark and I can't figure out exactly how Bush came out of it. Those are just a few of the topics Susan Page covers in the biography. Page is a very "easy" and smooth writer. I have a better view of Barbara Pierce Bush after reading the book.

First I really like Susan Page and knew this would be a well written book and it is. I see her on television often and trust her judgement. This book has broken my heart. I love Barbara Bush and have always admired her and admire her even more now. George H. W. Bush is the only Republican I have ever voted for, twice. No other. I am so sad about him after reading this I don't know what to do, but I am better off knowing. No man belongs on a pedestal, yet George stayed on one as long as she lived. She loved him, no matter what until the day she died. Loyalty to him and her family was who she was. Barbara Bush was a remarkable lady who had a lot of grief, but had a privileged life, lots of friends, and lived through remarkable times. She had much more influence than everyone knew and it is a good thing because she was an excellent judge of character with a wonderful mind and quick wit. Nancy It is just too bad she wasn't in politics herself. The book is great, very readable, sometimes sad and sometimes laugh out loud good.

I'm one of those guys who had an on again, off again, feeling of love and respect for First Lady Barbara Bush. In 1984 I took umbrage at her for her disdain towards POTUS candidate Walter Mondale's choice for VP. I also recollect disappoinment in her when her husband, George H W Bush got elected Pesident, instead of MA Gov. Michael Dukakis. Then, however, I came to see how similar she was to my own grandmother and, well, I came to a greater appreciation of her despite her political allegiance. Now, after having read (and listened to the Audible edition) of "The Matriarch," I have a better understanding and much greater empathy for the person (and for the other wives of presidents and presidential candidates). Without giving any spoilers, if you do choose to read this book, pay especial attention to the small bit regarding Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan. As for myself, I felt some sympathy towards Barbara, to be sure, but also a good deal of sadness at her disappointment and just how it hit her in a very personal way. In fact, it reminded me of some of my intimate discussions with my own mother as her life was edging toward its end. And, yes, before you ask, tears do now well up in my eyes in remembrance of the sadness recollected by mom regarding events of her youth or early adulthood. So far as I know, neither of my siblings ever heard the regrets she expressed.THAT is the worth of "The Matriarch."Incidentally, this is probably my last review for Amazon Customer Reviews. `For whatever reason, they seem determined to ensure my reviews do not post in a timely manner. Unlike times past, when I submit my reviews, Amazon chooses to delay posting until at least a dozen other reviews post first. The technique is known as burying the review. Further, my review of "Becoming" was removed after it posted more than 700 helpful votes. So, of course, I can take a hint...BLUSH FACTOR: This is a book that can certainly be read by anybody. The only eff word, believe it or not, appears in the footnotes, which is something few word read anyway.WRITING & EDITING: Flows very smoothly and with no typos or editing snafus. It doesn't have the same tonal quality as "Becoming" but it does keep one's interest throughout.BOTTOM LINE:Four stars out of five. I enjoyed it, felt deeply saddened in places where Barbara Bush suffered tragedy or heartbreak, but also immense gladness when she experienced the happiness that comes when one is young and in love. I feel that this book made me see more sides of Babbs than I ever would have seen otherwise.

Five Stars

Very accommodating and want to make it right for you! I truly enjoy Natural Stone Bead and this bracelet is a fine addition to my valet! The beads are of a good quality along with the four black lava beads. I like the 8 mm size as it is just enough to be noticed but not overbearing. I will purchase it again.

I'm in my 60's, and I've been playing guitar and other stringed instruments (mandolin, fiddle, banjo) for most of my life. I've always depended on my ear, which is pretty good, and on the bits of theory I'd pick up here and there. Mostly I've played out of patterns, major scales, and minor pentatonic scales. A lot of guitar can be played out of patterns, but I've always felt I was missing a whole world of possible sounds and expressions, and decided to do something about it. I began buying books on various aspects of guitar playing, mostly tending toward jazz chords, arpeggios, extensions, and that sort of thing. I've found a few books worth studying, but this one, The Practical Guide to Modern Music Theory for Guitarists, is definitely the one I'd be happy to refer any guitarist looking to better his/her playing abilities. Mr. Alexanderbegins the book with a fairly complete look at how music works--the major scale, minor scales, how chords are built, common chord progressions, and the like. I thought I knew most of this stuff, but he managed, with straightforward, clear expositions, to fill me in on details that I hadn't realized I hadn't known. The meat of the book, once the preliminaries are out of the way, focuses on modes and how they can be utilized; building chords on the individual degrees of each mode, soloing, and much more. There's much work to be done by the student here, but much to be gained. I've been working with the Dorian mode to begin, but I'll be utilizing the information in this well-written book for many months, at least. I feel like my playing has already benefitted from the studies presented here, though I've only begun. I can't recommend this book highly enough to my fellow guitarists.

This book is pretty good. I have accrued a lot of theory books over the years, I pick them up whenever I can, each one usually has at least one thing that it explains better than the others. I am a guitarist, but I tend to prefer books that cover theory in a more generalized, instrument agnostic fashion. I dunno, I think this stuff just gels better with me when it's more abstract.I think this book in particular is a great starter book for guitarists that want to play basic, traditional rock-n-roll. While it does have some good information about diatonic scales and modes, there's a pretty strong slant towards pentatonic playing... that can be good or bad depending on what you're trying to accomplish. This book is straightforward and easy to understand, and honestly better than most of the shorter theory books out there. There is one thing that It does a great job at hammering home: the difference between a mode and a position... this particular topic is a bit of a pet peeve of mine because it was something I had a lot of problems with when I was younger. I don't know, I guess I've always found the complete lack of clear information on this topic frustrating. It makes me wonder how many instructors understand it themselves?Worth a look for sure.

This guy really knows how to write an instruction book that is actually useful. After buying a few titles on Amazon and being disappointed, Joseph's books have been by far the most useful (at this time I have three of his books).I have been an acoustic-strumming-only guitar player for years. I bought an electric a few years ago, but I have basically been playing it like an acoustic. Now I'm really trying to expand my playing. I do know quite a bit of music theory for a non-pro musician. That knowledge let me skim through the first section of the book and get to the modal exercises which is more "guitar specific". Great help in learning to improve my lead guitar playing. Most instruction books like this have a CD with the physical book, but offer nothing for Kindle versions making the books worthless. However, with this book you get to download the audio from his web site. Very awesome. And if you want the book as PDF, he'll send that also.

Very clear explanation of music theory, including the straightforward ways to work with the circle of 5ths, using the guitar fretboard as the basis of where the notes are rather than a keyboard is much easier to directly equate to the instrument. The audio examples I downloaded to go with the book are also clearly marked within the book. Following along and playing, or just listen, then play, then re-listen you know if you have the concept down. Not quite like being in a private lesson, but like any other learning task, you get out of it what you put in. I'm learning more about playing guitar through this book than I have with just playing chords from a music book over the last 35-40 years. The lessons are in small enough chunks to not be overwhelming, but are still pushing the reader forward with the concepts. This would be a good book for anyone who even just wants a refresher on music theory applied to playing guitar. I'm about halfway through, but have looked ahead to see how all is building steadily. Like all books of this format, you'll need something to hold it open, in particular when new.

I have several guitar books by Joseph Alexander and have found them all to be "breathrough" type of books. I have played guitar on and off for many years and am now ready to settle down to some serious study in my retirement. I have taken basic music theory and some ear training so I am already familiar with some of the fundamentals but what I love about this book is how it applies music theory to the guitar. Most of time theory is taught in relation to the piano. I love how the author breaks down each concept and there is plenty of application through short drills along with audio files to hear what the concepts sound like. I want to put in a good musical foundation to grow on and I think this book is the perfect teacher. And speaking of teachers, most teachers don't teach you anything about theory, only about chords or chord forms. Also I like that I can do this at my own (sometimes slow) pace. Bravo!
