Another amazing novel from the author, who seems to know every hidden crack and crevice in DC. Similar to his earlier book about the Reagan administration, "Finale", the author brings George W Bush's 2nd term to life, real events and real people surrounding a story about Iraq, New Orleans, and a love affair between 2 people who rediscovered each other after years of separation. Most impressive is the description of the backbiting between Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice and their assorted hanger-oners, with a lot of other high-profile names and events thrown in for good measure. Even Brett Kavanaugh makes a couple of appearances. Write faster, Mr. Mallon, a yearly book would be most appreciated.

This is the third volume in a trilogy which began with TM’s WATERGATE and continued with his novel about President Reagan, FINALE. Both of these are fabulous books; the third may be even more impressive because the material is somewhat less compelling and draws out all of his masterful strengths and strokes. The novel is ‘historical’ but it attempts to ‘reimagine’ rather than ‘reconstruct.’ It begins with a 5-page list of dramatis personae; the fictional characters (of which there are very few) are put in quotation marks. The subject matter is Bush’s second term, with principal focus on Katrina and, eventually, the surge. The historical story is bracketed by an account of a romantic relationship between two fictional Texans, one of whom comes to work for the NEH (in a fictionalized restructuring), the second for Donald Rumsfeld. The book largely consists of dialogue that is as pointed, nuanced and riveting as one could possibly imagine. This is what I call a ‘carry-around book,’ one that you simply cannot stop reading but must carry around wherever you are and whatever you must do, on the off chance that you might find the time to devour as many pages as possible. The book is telling and, I would say, significant, because it is scrupulously fair and scrupulously honest. The characters are portrayed in all of their humanity and there is little or no perceptible partisanship. Goethe says that to understand is to forgive. As the author takes us deeper and deeper into his characters’ hearts and minds we see them as they actually may be or may have been, not as the cardboard stereotypes of the contemporary press and media.Given the human component one has a far greater appreciation for the politics of the novel. TM seldom bludgeons but he reveals the hearts of fatuous ambition and the hearts of sincere aspiration with a deft touch and a writerly economy that is all too rare in our literary culture. Dark sides appear and stereotypes dissipate. As W (the painter) says in the book’s epilogue, there is color in the shadows. While I will not belabor the point I must note that this sort of book is very, very hard to do, in part because of the necessity of aligning timelines, recapturing and reproducing the public record (especially in speeches, press briefings and public announcements), keeping all of the material culture and communications technology items in order and managing the factual events surrounding hundreds of characters intact and accurate. One of the characters in the book was a friend of mine and I can hear his voice as TM recreates it.Most important, the book must be plausible, particularly in its rendition of character. Stereotyping is easy and playing to a partisan crowd would be easier still, but taking difficult, complex and controversial material and reimagining it in a way that heightens plausibility rather than diminishing it is no small accomplishment.Anyone interested in politics, history and American culture should read TM’s books. LANDFALL is a stunner. Prepare to laugh out loud and to taste your own tears. One can only imagine what treats and insights lie ahead if and when TM explores the post-Bush presidencies.

This the best of Mellon’s trilogy about three Republican presidents. I knew a number of the people he has “fictionalized,” and his characterizations are stunningly accurate. The descriptions of politics and policy are insightful...worthy of being examples in a political science course. Bravo.

Mostly an imagined recreation of George W. Bush’s second term wound around a tortuous romance of midlevel staffers. As described, the personalities and language of the historical characters -- W, Laura Bush Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Ann Richards, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Larry King and Bob Dole — seen dead long. Makes me like especially Laura, and higher my conflicted feelings about W - a decent impulsive guy who was not ready to be president.

Could not put it down!

Although I finished the novel, I didn't much like Landfall. Why create an elaborate fiction around George W. Bush? Aren't there enough real facts to write about? The author apparently wants us to know that Bush was likable. His parents too. Condi was devoted. Rumsfeld an enigma, and Cheney not to be trusted. Do we really need to relive the Bush presidency? I didn't.

I have read and enjoyed most of Mallon's novel, but I only got to p.87 of this one. Possibly my tastes have changed, and certainly I could have kept reading. To me, it was repetitive in its characterizations of historic characters and too obviously meant to be superficially entertaining.
