This is such a good book! I love seeing crossdressing/genderqueerness portrayed in such a loving, charming way - where you can see how happy it makes Prince Sebastian and how much it means to him. I love the love story sooo much, and the dress designs are all so fun. The ending was also AMAZING. Like, I dig that this all ended in the happiest way possible without downplaying some of the risks and emotions that come with potential rejection when you're gender nonconforming. It was a surprisingly quick read, but because the images take up so much space, it ends up being a pretty hefty book, so I felt like I was getting a lot of value out of it. The design of the cover and the sturdiness is great, and while I was surprised that in some senses the lineart seemed a little unpolished, that in no way detracted from the read - and I'm really happy to support a growing artist.
This is a wonderful thing that you should read in your life. It is a well crafted, well thought out story about inclusiveness and self love that doesn't feel too contrived. This is something that I would equally recommend and share with adults as well as children, everyone can get something special out of The Prince and the Dressmaker. I love that I have a physical hardcopy to keep on my coffee table, a friend could feasibly flip through the entire thing in an hour. Well done Jen!
Received my book today and started reading immediately. I was worried based on the prerelease reviews that I would find the story too short or lacking in oomph, but I really love it just like I hoped. It's sweet and obviously the art is so lovely. The hard cover for this book is matte for the most part and the design makes it feel like an old fashioned fairy tale book (in a good way). I don't have kids but this is offered in a way that feels like my hypothetical children would go to the bookshelf and excitedly pick "The Prince and the Dressmaker" for bedtime stories (and I would totes read it to them).
Sometimes when a book gets a lot of buzz online, I'm a bit wary about picking it up because it might not live up to the hype for me. I shouldn't have worried about reading The Prince and the Dressmaker because it's as delightful as everyone said it would be! Lovely story accompanied by beautiful artwork, this is a standalone graphic novel that has a lot of heart. I loved that the prince is genderfluid and likes to dress up in gorgeous gowns and parade around Paris as Lady Crystallia. The secret behind his fabulous outfits is Frances, the dressmaker and designer who shares his passion for fashion. It was so much fun reading about these two characters and seeing them go after their dreams. They start off as strangers but quickly become best friends because they understand each other so well. I loved the central theme of being true to yourself even if it will make life more difficult. And the art was a visual pleasure to go through. I want the dresses pictured to have real life versions so I can wear them! I'm going to try to bookstagram some pages that feature these dresses so you can see what I mean. Will definitely be on the lookout for more of Jen Wang's books. I bought my copy in the US, but I really hope local bookstores would stock this up.
I enjoyed the fairy tale-like story featuring a genderfluid prince and a talented female dressmaker who is career-oriented. There's a lot to love here. Lots of people have pointed out the positive representation for genderfluidity, and that was a selling point for me, but I also enjoyed the positive representation for career women. Frances is a woman (well, teenager) who has a goal and works solidly towards that. She isn't going to behave immorally, but she is going to do what is best for herself. Frances has a core of strength that is wonderful to see. The artwork is honest, simplistic compared to other graphic novels, but not so much that emotion and scenery is lost. I particularly enjoyed how much Wang was able to convey using wordless frames. I can only assume Jen Wang loves fashion because the elaborate gowns are so detailed as to be characters in the story themselves! The books is clean in terms of violence, sex, and language, making it appropriate for both kids and adults. The subject matter would make it great for a kid who is questioning or is trans, or kids who have friends who are.Negative - the binding. I bought the hardcopy and after 1 day bouncing around my backpack it was already torn a bit on the spine and ragged at the corners.
Oh how this book made me smile!! It’s set in a 19th century-ish Paris where 16 year-old Prince Sebastian has a huge secret he is keeping from his parents - from everyone except for his trusted butler. He loves getting dressed up in fancy gowns and makeup and wigs. Eventually he discovers a lowly dressmaker, Frances, who has shown she is willing to break societal norms - and secretly hires her to help him transform into a different, more glamorous person. But things go awry when Sebastian’s parents try to arrange his marriage and his alter-ego (and her designer) become the talk of the town. It’s like Project Runway meets Versailles with a twist of Cinderella. And I really, really want Disney to make this into a movie! We need more books that go beyond the traditional gender norms so kids can both see themselves and also so that kids can see others not like them at the center of important and positive and fun stories.
I loved it!! I read it as soon as I got home! Although the packaging looked safely secured, i noticed the spine had a rip and bent a little. Not that much of a flaw but I would’ve liked it even more if it were shipped/handed nicely. Overall, I love the story! I’m already looking forward for Wang’s new work!
