Brian Cummings received his BA at Cambridge University, where he also took his PhD under the supervision of the poet Geoffrey Hill and the church historian Eamon Duffy. He was previously a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge before moving to Sussex, and, from October 2012, the University of York. He was a British Academy Exchange Fellow at the Huntington Library, California, in 2007 and held a three-year Major Research Fellowship with the Leverhulme Trust from 2009 to 2012.

This book gives excellent background information for the three main Traditional Church of England Books of Common Prayer and can also be used for devotions. I keep it nearby to read the daily psalms, though I do not use this when I travel. For Protestants who adhere to the 39 Articles, who who just want a Reformed prayer book, the 1662 BCP is complete in this edition. Come with a ribbon marker.

Brian Cummings has produced an excellent edition of the Prayer Book texts of 1549, 1559, and 1662. It is not a facsimile edition, but the texts are reproduced in a clear and readable format. Many an author has lost his way in the thicket of scholarship surrounding the Tudor and Caroline church. Cummings has provided an introduction which navigates this hugely complex topic in a way that is both helpful and succinct. The author offers notes and commentary on the contents of the three prayer books that is insightful. A select bibliography is provided for those who wish to explore specific issues more fully. This book will be of use to the merely curious and to the serious student.

A remarkable volume...the contents are wonderful from the edition of 1662 AD. This edition is still used today in England for Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer rituals.

The ability to construct a series of repetitve phrases, set against a (typically) diatonic tune, one which hopefully sticks in your brain, long enough to force you to buy a CD of something you heard only once is not only art - it's simply magic...And in John Stevens' "The Songs of John Lennon", the magician's secrets are revealed...Throughout the course of this book, we're not only given some very interesting and detailed history about the song(s) in question (as well as recording and release information) but all this, together with comprehensive and brilliantly detailed descriptions relating to Lennon's song Structure, Phrasing and 'Prosody' (ie, versification/metrical structure).Now, if these terms are a bit scary to you, fear not -- as Stevens carefully outlines the basic terminology and is consistent with his usage throughout. Book binding faulty. Entire sections of book fell out. It was a gift so no time to reorder for Christmas. It really doesn't even deserve 1 star.

First of all, I've really enjoyed this book so far. My reasons for purchasing it were to gain a better understanding of songwriting as a craft. There are lots of books out there (some of which I also own!) that go into the construction of a song, but usually only provide a few subpar examples of the technique in real life practice. This book is filled with excellent songs to use as examples for different ways to craft a song.I haven't found understanding this book terribly difficult, but there are a couple of techniques which could have used a bit more of an explanation. Particularly melodic/lyrical phrasing, as to me it appears there are several ways to break a phrase up. It's not very clear what guidlines the author uses regarding that.Even with some confusion, I've still found it very informative. I really wish there were more books just like it. I'd love to see this done with more modern bands as well.

As a songwriter and longtime fan of John Lennon, this is the best book I have found on his songs. I refer to it over and over. When I travel, it is one of the few books that finds its way into my backpack. An interesting analysis of 20+ Beatles era John Lennon songs. The highest praise I can offer the book is that I did honestly gain a greater understanding of the manner in which Lennon composed his songs. I did have trouble understanding some of the musical jargon Stevens used, though to his credit he explains most of the terminology he employs in the book in the first chapter. Most irritating to me were a couple of misquotes of Lennon's lyrics, numerous typos, and surprisingly (since this was written by a college professor) a number of usage errors. Worth buying if you're interested in this sort of thing. However, Alan W. Pollack's analysis of the ENTIRE official Beatles' canon is a far more informative, better written, and comprehensive look at Lennon's ouvre.

This book was just exactly the right thing to help me select plants for myyard. My choices are planted and thriving because they're the right plantin the right spot. There are recommended native plants along side imported speciesfrom similar climates, and exceptional nursery hybrids. The fact is, Ichecked a copy of this book out from my local library and had to have oneof my own. I'd recommend it to anyone living in this region. High pointsinclude diagrams of planting schemes for sun, shade, large areas and small,plus photographs of each specimen, and detailed plant profiles. There are alsohardscape installation guides for things like ponds, patios and walkways.The recommendations apply from the California border through westernOregon, Washington, and British Columbia as far north as the northern tipof Vancouver Island and East to the Cascade Mountain range.

The best landscaping book I’ve read. First chapters are illustrated ideas for plants that work together in sunny or shady locations. Each “portrait” includes a drawing of the entire area plus the names and a brief description of each plant. There are also pictures and more detailed information about each plant in a glossary. It’s an amazing book, much easier to use than the Sunset Western Gardening Book. I have planned my planting beds using this book. Great for gardeners in the Pacific Northwest. Highly recommend this book especially for beginning gardeners.

I've just moved to the Pacific Northwest from Arizona and this book has been a great source of information for me. The very specific climate on the coast is described in detail and I understand much better what I can realistically do with my new garden. The plant profiles are also helpful, the photographs good quality. If you're looking for solid advice from experienced Northwest gardeners, this is for you.

Initially I received this book as a gift. I loved it so much I've bought it as gifts for other people.The book is laid out quite well, its easy to read and follow. It covers most of the more popular plants that are common in the northwest.The garden plans are helpful in designing my own gardens as far as plant layout. The other projects in the book are easy to follow with great directions and excellent illistrations.I'm an avid gardener and with 10 acres, I'm always expanding and adding new gardens. I have several books but this one is the one I go back to year after year.

This book is all right if you are looking for ideas of plant layouts or how to devise a landscape setup for a very specific area of your property. Scenarios are shown in sketch format in, for example, front yards, big backyards, yards with slopes, places where you want to screen things (air conditioner units, trash cans). After each scenario sketch, real photographs of the suggested plants are shown, along with a brief descirption of the plant (height, width, Latin and English names, sun or shade, etc.) A small section at the end is devoted to the mechanics of accomplishing hardscape features such as retaining walls, patios, and arbors.The book seems like it would be a good resource if you were writing a term paper, but it seems too shallow for a serious relandscape job. Many of the suggested plants are repeated in multiple scenarios, so there is not a very large variety of plants. It is also very skimpy on flowers, focusing mostly on shrubs with a few trees and groundcovers. I don't think I'd buy this book if there'd been a chance to see it before buying, but now that I have it, we'll keep it.

I just moved to the Northwest and needed help getting started with my landscape. I took this book from the library and after I ran out of renewals I bought my own.

A fantastic resource for those starting from scratch or revamping their outdoor space. Useful as a planting guide while also serving as a how to building guide for garden structures.

Lots of good ideas to ponder over the winter.

It is a gold mine of information and helpful suggestions for navigating frustrating and tough parenting situations, all while clearly pointing out my toddler’s developmental capability during those situations. This book has given me the tools to diffuse and even stop tantrums before they begin by enabling me to view my toddler’s behavior to certain situations through his eyes and evaluate why the behavior is occurring in the first place. I love that the book is extremely easy to navigate and Aubrey has real life practical suggestions for every type of situation: tantrums, sleeping, toilet learning, mealtimes, non-compliance, etc. Each age section begins with an overview of what that age child is capable of developmentally, along with limitations, before moving onto strategies for age-appropriate disciple and then highlighting common issues parents face during this age. As a parent to a one and three year old in the midst of navigating toddlerhood I highly recommend this book, I’m extremely grateful it now resides in my parenting toolbox!

I started reading it when my son turned 1 year old and the timing was amazing, because shortly after I started to see some tantrums coming. She helped me to see these, not as a bad thing, but as a normal thing that little people do to express the big things they are feeling when they don't really have words yet. Her perspective has helped me stay calm and approach things in a way that I believe is building strong bonds of trust with my child.This book is organized in chapters by age 1-4 so it is very easy to find what you need and it is a quick read. I find myself going back and reading certain sections more than once. You won't regret buying this book and you may find yourself ordering one for a friend!

I was feeling so overwhelmed with the toddler stage and reading this book felt like getting kind, thoughtful advice from a dear friend! I adore her approach to respectful discipline which honors the child while recognizing the importance of setting boundaries. If you are wanting to be more of a guide as a parent or looking for a gentler method of discipline, this book is an essential resource. It's a quick read (which I GREATLY appreciate) but offers many research-based, developmentally appropriate suggestions. Understanding each child's developmental stage, as well as what expectations are really appropriate for each age group was so helpful, quite a relief, actually. There are plenty of very practical suggestions for handling specific behaviors as well. I've been trying many of the suggestions with my own children and they really are effective. Aubrey clearly sees children for the gifts they are and I am so grateful for this book.

This is very beneficial for us busy parents. It also gives short explanations of why children behave the way they do, making us adults understand them more, and thus be able to come from a positive point whenever they do things they do.
