I have never been a St. Paul fan. His" woman go home and do what your husband wants" speech was a real turn off, but I found out he didn't write it. It was written later by someone else. I like this book and I even like Paul. Pope Benedict does a lot to explain Paul and how he fits in. I found the book illuminating and realized that I have not been fair to Paul. Pope Benedict is a real academic and I found his work really thought-provoking. St. Paul is really worth the time.
Slender volume on the post-Damascus life of the inimitable St. Paul.Effectively an English-translation* collection of teachings from the General Audiences July 2008-Feb 2009 from the ever-erudite Pope (Emeritus) Benedict XVI. (*Translation by L'Osservatore Romano). TheWith each chapter averaging approximately 12pp., one may comfortably read one or more in an evening, but the depth of the profound messages will require much longer to fully discern & assimilate. As parish Adult Faith Formation Director, I'm using this book to enhance our current scripture study on the epistles of Paul. The physical book itself is very lovely. It's appearance is rich and elegant.A fine addition to any spiritual library.NB: While I purchased this clothbound/hardcover book used, in "good" condition; I was very pleasantly surprised to receive what appeared to be one in " brand new" condition. The volume was also fully sealed in plastic and shipped in a study box.I am very pleased with this transaction.Thank you for reading,-CC, Amazon Prime Member-Reviewer
Charming, easy read from the Pope who is the master-digester of theological and exegetical works for the lay person. I liked on p.. 24 when Bededict said that Paul's conversion was his death and Resurrection. He continually reaffirms that for St. Paul the Church was the faith family of God, not just some mere sociological association of individuals. Although being an eminently rational, erudite person, the Pope affirms on p. 107 that "love understands better than reason alone."
Provides excellent background on the Apostle Paul. I began reading this book while leading a Bible Study on the book of Acts. It gave additional information and understanding on the Apostle and his writings, adding to out study discussions. Very informative and somewhat theological, but still easy for a layman to follow and understand. Enjoyed reading it.
The Pope continues the teaching he began in earlier audiences that have been turned into books, like The Fathers and The Apostles. This sketch of The Apostle is a loving, insightful meditation on Paul's conversion and teaching. One of the left-handed compliments in vogue in the secular world is to label Paul as the "founder of the Church." Beware of people who propagate this myth; they'll use the bible as a reliable, historical source when they wish to document Paul's travels - and travel he did - he truly was the apostle to the Gentiles, and evangelized much of the Mediterranean.Yet these same people suddenly adopt a skeptical approach to the bible when you try to point out that Paul actually met Christ on the road to Damascus, or the years he spent in learning the teaching of Christ from the twelve in Jerusalem. The goal of such people is to separate Christ from his Church, to say that the Church is a human creation and not the mystical body of the Son of God. Pope Benedict carefully and lovingly presents Paul as very much a pillar of Christ's Church, but not its founder.Pope Benedict also explains Paul's message of justification by faith, pointing out the places of agreement with Protestants, but also very gently distinguishing the place of charity (manifested in works) as the ultimate fruit of faith. Faith without works is indeed a dead faith. Some of the topics covered are the sacraments (especially Baptism, the Eucharist and Marriage), Paul's Christology, the Cross and the Resurrection (and why the two can't be separated and make up one Paschal mystery), and the Parousia. This is excellent teaching for all believers; it is deep in meaning without being technical or difficult to understand.
Once again Pope Benedict XVI does a masterful job of explaining new testament writings in a concise and understandable way. This is really a series of talks he gave at his general audience on Wednesdays in 2008/09 time frame. They are masterful in the weaving together teaching on and showing the historical roots of the letters of St Paul. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of St Paul and his writings.
I enjoyed this book. However, if you are looking for a more in depth review of St. Paul and his life, I would look elsewhere. The former pope, as always in my opinion, provides an elegant theological overview of Paul's mission and message. While I found this interesting, I felt that a discussion of Paul himself was quite peripheral and almost served as a platform for former Pope Benedict to teach theology. In fact, each chapter was derived from his weekly addresses best I could discern.
This topical study of (drawn from HH Benedict XVI's General Audiences during the Year of St. Paul, 2008) explores and discusses the biography of St. Paul and important aspects of his theology (particularly Christology and Soteriology/Justification, but also Ecclesiology, Eschatology, and Liturgical/Sacramental Theology) as drawn from the Epistles as well as the Acts of the Apostles. The book as a whole draws the reader closer to the saint, providing the reader an excellent overview of the Pauline writings that will provide a framework for future study of them.
