Edible Forest Gardens, Vol. 2: Ecological Design And Practice For Temperate-Climate Permaculture, by Dave Jacke Eric Toensmeier

Review

HortIdeas-We reviewed the first volume of this two-volume set in September 2005 HortIdeas--in fact, we were so impressed by it that we devoted that month's Book Reviews section entirely to it. Until Mycelium Running--another amazingly important and well-done book--appeared, we were considering doing the same this month for the second volume of Edible Forest Gardens, which is much thicker (by more than 270 pages!) than the first volume. The shorter length of this review certainly does not reflect the relative importance of the volumes--we recommend that anyone interested in experimenting with temperate-zone "gardening in the image of the forest" should study both.Although Volume 2 ostensibly emphasizes "practical" information building on the "theoretical" ideas in Volume 1, it is clear that both volumes are essentially theoretical. That's because (as we discussed in our review of Volume 1) nobody has yet convincingly shown the viability of forest gardening (relying heavily on perennial crops) in temperate areas as a sustainable alternative to conventional gardening (based mainly on annual crops). Jacke and Toensmeier are, admirably, attempting to disseminate ideas gathered from a variety of source that might enable such viability. Ultimately, at this stage development of temperate-zone forest gardening techniques, virtually all approaches are experimental and in need of validation. We simply do not currently know their limitations.Understanding that knowledge on "nest practices" for temperate-zone forest gardening needs to be established experimentally can be exciting for those willing and able to adopt the scientific attitude: no matter how they turn out, the results of an experiment, performed appropriately (meaning especially that adequate control treatments are provided), are never "bad." In other words, we think that would-be temperate-zone forest gardeners who are sincerely interested in helping to establish this novel form of agriculture should proceed by trying to test some of Jacke and Toensmeier's numerous design, site preparation, species choice and establishment, and management guidelines. We view Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens not as a recipe book for what works but rather as a compendium of possibilities for what could work--an invitation par excellence to experimentation instead of complacency. Right on! (Greg Williams)Plants and Gardens News--Patricia Jonas, Brooklyn Botanic Garden-But even if you grow enough organic food to feed yourself, are you doing what's best for the ecosystem? "Many drawbacks of modern agriculture persist in organic farming and gardening," Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier write in Edible Forest Gardens, because they do not "mimic the structure of natural systems, only selected functions." Even Quail Hill Farm members are still harvesting mostly annual crops grown in plowed fields. Jacke and Toensmeier offer a radical vision for stepping out of the conceptual continuum of conventional agriculture and organic farming. They point to the productivity of temperate forests--which is twice that of agricultural land in terms of net calories--and take that as their design model. Building on Robert Hart's classic book, Forest Gardening, and incorporating permaculture practice, Jacke and Toensmeier propose a garden where many species of edible perennial plants are grown together in a design that mimics forest structure and function.Edible Forest Gardens is an ambitious two-volume work whose influence should extend well beyond ecologists and permaculturists and, in the best of all outcomes, reach into the mainstream. Volume one lays out the "Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture," and it also includes a very useful analysis of existing forest gardens (one only 50 by 90 feet) and a tantalizing 30-page appendix of "top 100" species. As of this writing, volume two, which focuses on practical design and maintenance considerations, is just being released, but on the evidence of volume one, I have no doubt the set will be an indispensable reference for gardeners and farmers for decades."When people have food gardens," the authors write, "they usually are tucked out of sight and out of view of the neighbors. They rely on external inputs of energy, nutrients, insect and disease controls, and water and are based primarily on annual plants. For some reason, growing food is considered unsightly, unseemly, possibly antisocial, and in some towns and cities, illegal! The tremendous infrastructure we have built in our cities and towns reflects a culture and horticulture of separation and isolation." The consequences of such attitudes about growing food have been disastrous, and each of us can contribute to the repair effort. Jacke and Toensmeier say that the principles of forest gardening can be applied even in a tiny urban yard or on a rooftop. Containers of edible perennials and annuals on a rooftop are not most farmers' idea of agriculture, but I grow nearly 20 percent of the authors' top 100 species and intend to look for ways to take this small start much further. And what about chocolate and oranges? Clearly there are foods that cannot be grown in a temperate forest. "We do not expect forest gardening to replace regular gardening or the foods we know and love," the authors admit. "Just how far we can take forest gardening in supplying food for ourselves is not yet determined." Finding the answer may be the most optimistic work gardeners and farmers can do."A tree de force! A must-have set of books for anyone serious about polyculture, integrated organic garden and landscape design, permaculture in the temperate zones and, of course, food forests. The charts of condensed information alone are worth the price of admission. The best book on these topics in years Keep these books within arm's reach at all times!"--Robert Kourick, author of Designing and Maintaining Your Edible Landscape Naturally

From the Publisher

"While the scope of the permaculture concept has expanded from its initial focus on forest gardening, it is exciting to see how the authors have brought together the ecological theory and practise necessary to further this aspect of the permaculture agenda." David Holmgren, cofounder of permaculture and author Permaculture: Principles and Practices Beyond Sustainability "...Perhaps as important as it's applied ecological contributions is its psychological gifts of hope and visions of achievable, more meaningful ways of living in a post-oil world." Dr. Stuart Hill Foundation Chair of Social Ecology, University of Western Sydney, Australia "Your book blows me away! So much work, so much depth. I hear the voice of this good and gentle earth in Edible Forest Gardens . . . and am excited to keep reading more!" Michael Phillips, author The Apple Grower: A Guide for the Organic Orchardist and coauthor The Herbalist's Way.

This was a required text for a course on Ecological Design that I was taking. It is a fabulous book. My instructor chose this volume because it includes more of the design process than Volume 1 (which was not required, but is on my wish list for reference materials). Dave Jacke takes you through the fundamentals of site analysis, evaluating opportunities and constraints and working through the design process. The appendixes alone are probably worth the cost of the book. His nectary calendar is extremely useful for trying to identify plants that will provide food for various pollinators; the species by function chart helps you easily see the best nitrogen fixers and dynamic accumulators; his species lifespan list gives you a reference point for how often you will either need to purchase or regenerate a given species...This is the first time I've ever felt strongly compelled to highlight and mark in my book. Normally, I sell my books back, but this one is a definite KEEPER! I have highlights and stickies throughout marking my most frequently referenced charts. The only caveat/issue I can even think of is... the plants/species are more tailored to the North Eastern United States and less to the Western United States where I live... A great number of the species from the northeast are naturalized here or will grow here, but that may be a limitation/problem for some people.

You know the adage "Hindsight is 20/20"? Well, had I known that information I'd learned in the past 10+ books I've purchased regarding food forestry/permaculture would not only be contained in this book but expanded upon, I would have saved myself hundreds of dollars and weeks of reading. I always balked at the cost of these books and just kept them in my my "Maybe" list. Believe me, I'm kicking myself. The appendices alone are worth the cost of the book. I am the type of person that likes to be told in detail what I should do until I feel confident enough to experiment and come up with my own methods. Especially if I have invested so much time and money to achieve a certain goal. With this book, all of my fears have been assuaged and I feel I have the knowledge and skills to carry out my dreams of a sustainable edible forest garden.I cannot recommend this book enough!

This is the perfect companion for Gaia's Garden and Permaculture: A Designer's Manual (PADM). If I could only have two books on Permaculture it would be Gaia's Garden and Edible Forest Gardens Vol. 2. The tables in this book are worth the price and will save untold hours of research trying to find the right plants for my zone, soil type and how they fit into my plantings. Want to know what nitrogen fixers work in your zone? This is the book. Want to know what bioaccumulators can work well in your soil? This is the book. There are over 600 different forest garden trees, shrubs, and other plants broken down by their role in your design. Having to do this research on my own would triple my design time. I love this book. I've read Vol. 1 of this series and while it is good, I consider it redundant if you already have PADM. While it has some good info in it, I think Vol. 2 has much more to contribute if you already have PADM or Gaia's Garden (or any other of the great permaculture basics books). If you have money to throw around sure, by both volumes, but if you are like me and paying college textbook pricing for a book is hard to justify, trust me that this book is worth the cost.

I like the species matrix charts and certain sections, like the excellent coverage of beneficial microbes. I expected this book to have more specific "Design and Practice" information. It does contain lots of specifics, but is easily 70% basic theory and concepts. This book has the style and format of a college text book. This book is going to seem dry and unnecessarily wordy for most dirt-in-the-fingernails practitioners of permaculture. The charts and index make it an invaluable edible forest species reference manual, but it's not a great book to read cover-to-cover, and I often wonder while reading it, if the author has practical field experience with the concepts presented,

It's no surprise to learn that Dave and Eric worked for seven years to write the Edible Forest Gardens books; the depth and breadth of permaculture knowledge that they present is incredible. Although I've heard some say that these books are not an easy read, I've found them to be fascinating, enjoyable and indispensable.I started my journey into permaculture with Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway, then decided to plant an edible forest in the back yard, so I purchased Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens, since it covers the practical consideration of forest gardening. Although this book is written so it can stand on its own, I also highly recommend volume 1, which focuses on the ecological vision and theory for temperate climate permaculture. Highly recommended!

This book is amazing. Even just the appendices in the back is worth the price of the book. If you're interested in permaculture, this is a must buy.

If you want to become an expert in edible forest garden design (as well as an expert in general design in your own right) then study this book and its companion volume 1. You won't regret the investment, and neither will the rest of society, after all is said and done!

This book is a tome. Wish it had more pictures, but you can't beat the info!

Taylor Caldwell was born in 1900 and was one of the 20th century’s most acclaimed novelists. She published forty books during her 50 year career. She was a favorite of my mother, but, although her books were certainly available in my high school library, I somehow never chanced to read any of them. When I recently learned that she had written a novel of Cicero, Pillar of Iron, I was eager to read it.Caldwell was a masterful novelist and, Pillar of Iron is, indeed, a tour de force. She starts with the hour of Cicero’s birth and ends with his assassination, covering a vast amount in between. Cicero was born in 106 B.C. at his family’s estate near Arpinum. His father, also named Marcus Tullius Cicero but referred to in the book as Tullius, was a member of the equestrian class and his mother, Helvia, came from a patrician family. In Rome, Cicero was considered a plebeian and a “new man.”In Caldwell’s novel, Cicero’s relationships with both Julius Caesar and Lucius Sergius Catalina go back to his childhood. Cicero is enrolled in a school and becomes a friend and confidant of the younger Julius Caesar, already a prodigy. At one point he protects Caesar from the bullying of Catalina. Catalina, whose patrician ancestry is unquestioned, despises Cicero as a Novus Homo. The two are bitter enemies from an early age. While Cicero is fond of Caesar, he has no illusions about his character, integrity, and ambition. While attending the school, Cicero also becomes friends with a Jewish boy named Noe Ben Joel, who influences him Jewish spiritual ways. This fictional character is a major presence throughout the book.Young Cicero has little interest in military affairs, preferring to leave such concerns to his younger brother Quintus. He becomes apprenticed to Quintus Mucius Scaevola to study law, and soon becomes a rising star in the Roman law courts. Among his most notable successes were his defense of Sextus Rocius on a charge of patricide, and his brilliant prosecution of Gaius Verres, former governor of Sicily on charges of extortion and corruption. All during this time Cicero interacts sporadically with Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, and Catalina. Caldwell presents these four as the core of a cabal whose purpose and ambition is to completely dominate and rule Rome. Catalina holds great sway with the dregs of the city, and it becomes clear to Caesar, Pompey and Crassus that he has become a madman. Cicero experiences an attack on his life where his attackers attempt to drown him to make his death appear as an accident. Caldwell portrays Caesar as Cicero’s protector thereafter, not from any altruistic motive but because Caesar has use for the honorable and uncorrupt Cicero as a front for his ambitions.Cicero becomes a politician and rises in the hierarchy of Rome. In 63 B.C. he is elected Consul with the tacit consent of Caesar. Pompey and Crassus, as they fear the mad Catalina more. Catalina forms a conspiracy with a number of senators as well as disparate unruly elements of the Roman population to, according to Cicero, burn Rome, massacre the Senate and take complete power. Cicero exposes the conspiracy and Catalina flees. Several of Catalina’s co-conspirators are arrested and, at Cicero’s urging and with consent of the Senate, are executed. In so doing, Cicero made two very powerful enemies, Publius Clodius Pulcher, and young Marc Anthony, the stepson of one of the executed conspirators. These enmities will make the rest of Cicero’s life difficult.Caldwell is a writer of great power and eloquence and the work is infinitely absorbing. At the same time, her religious and political agenda are clear and I think detract from the authenticity of the work. She presents Cicero as a sort of “proto-Christian” who maintains theistic beliefs in an “unknown God” and is obsessed with the notion that a “Massias” or savior is soon to come. The fictional Noe Ben Joel is her vehicle for imbuing Cicero with these notions. Cicero was esteemed by early Christians, as was Cato Uticensis whom Dante admits to Heaven despite his suicide. I think Caldwell would desire that Cicero be admitted to Heaven as well. In any case the novel has a decided pro Christian slant that I felt was inappropriate in a work about pre-Christian Rome. While Caldwell has obviously done a vast amount of research on Ancient Rome, there appears to be some gaps in her knowledge. For example, she has war chariots present at the battle where Catalina and his rag-tag army are destroyed. While the Romans loved their chariot races and triumphant generals rode through the streets in chariots, they never employed them in combat.Pillar Of Iron is a magnificent novel with much to recommend it, but I suggest it be taken with a pillar of salt.

I have been interested in the history of the Roman Republic and early Empire period for decades. Someone mentioned I might enjoy this book. I could not finish it since it was so painfully botched. Cicero was not a Christian and attempts to make him into a pre-Jesus Christian by taking cherry picked gobbets of his writing and recasting them in a Christian mindset is an insult. The inventions used to create a false narrative of his childhood etc are painful. I understand that a novel is different from a history and a novelist will take some minor liberties to make a story work. But this book simply makes nonsense up. Ms. Caldwell was an excellent writer but she blew this. Don't bother with this book unless you are willing to keep in mind nothing she says about Cicero in this book can be accepted as fact.

This book was published in 1965, and by then Taylor Caldwell was already very much concerned about the direction of politics and life in the USA. She made this concern amply clear in this fictional biography of the great Cicero, at on time required reading for anyone claiming to be educated. In the real world, Cicero's life spanned the key final decades of the decline of the Roman Republic. He sought to stem this decline, and his writings and speeches of this period have been noted by many as relevant to the decline of our republic. This was already the case, after the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the introduction of the New Deal, and Caldwell thought that Cicero's warnings were even more apt by the early 1960's. This book is definitely not pc due to Caldwell's views on the masses, and her repetition of Aristotle's view that "Republics decline into democracies and democracies degenerate into despotisms. This is a long book, and the complex but exciting plot is slowed down by excerpts of Cicero's speeches, as well as by the author's moralizing, and her introduction of a religious leitmotif centering around the expectations of the imminent arrival of the Messiah. Historically, this was true in the Middle East, but this had little impact on events in Rome. All the same, this is a very good book for anyone interested in what happened in and to Rome 2200 years ago, as there is much detailed information and description about life and events there. Indeed, this book is a painless way to learn about the Roman Republic, provided only that one disregards most of what Caldwell wrote about the military of the time. As always, Caldwell's writing is in the form of high literary English, and this is another reason for reading Caldwell's works. I rated this book four stars because the digressions from the main theme; in 500 pages this would have been a five star book in my view.

Read this book as a teenager when it first came out in 1965. Taylor Caldwell was a huge bestselling author at one time and it is now difficult to find her books. This fictionalized account of the life of Cicero is more relevant today than it was in the '60's. The parallels between the Roman Empire and present-day USA are inescapable. It is well-written, dramatic and compelling. You may have forgotten what it was like to read a bestseller that had no foul language, gratuitous sex scenes or cynicism. I recommend that you revisit this classic from the past.

There is a lot of great research here and if like me, you are curious or interested in Cicero, there is much to recommend in Caldwell's version of history. I couldn't give it more than 4 stars due to the writers style. It dragged and bored me at times but the story made up for that, so I recommend it but sometimes a description made me cringe.

This book has no basis in fact. It uses names from Roman history but perverts their stories into some weird soap opera nightmare. If you have any knowledge of Cicero or of Julius Caesar you will be offended at the way she uses these charachters.
