Helpful when I traveled to Costa Rica and Panama. The size was also great. There were a few basic phrases that were not included which would have been nice. It was also difficult to try and ask someone a question because the book doesn't explain many possible responses, so you end up asking the right question but having no idea what their response is. I don't know that these problems are inherent to the book but probably to all books like this. At the end of the day, I ended up using wifi and google translate a ton.

I'm really disappointed in this book. It's a great size, will fit in pocket or purse. It's British, that's the first difficulty. Just different enough to make it cumbersome. It's aimed at young people traveling on their own, rather than the general traveling public which ranges from those who go on a shoestring, families, and folks on tours. That's the second problem, it's manageable but focused mostly on the one group and what they might do. The worst thing is the organization. You have to guess where in the book things like thank you, please, etc are--it's fine to have chapters about various situations you might encounter, but only if you know what the editors considered the appropriate situation. There's a smallish dictionary in the back, a great idea, but the aforementioned basics like please and thank you and how much and numbers and time are not in it, I guess because somehow you're supposed to know what particular chapter they were covered in so you can flip back. This particular book was suggested by the tour company we're going to Italy with some time later this year, but I won't bother taking it along. I'll get something that's more straightforward.

I bought this book recently for my travel to Costa Rica. My Spanish is extremely limited to a few basic phrases like "Como estas" and "Hola". I found this book extremely useful. The book is well organized into chapters. I was able to quickly form short sentences to communicate with shuttle drivers, hotel staff and the local Ticos in Costa Rica. I got so hooked to speaking Spanish that I was reading this book whenever I got a chance to get better at my Spanish skills. Highly recommended.

This pocket guide was wonderful for learning common phrases and communicating w/locals in Baja, Mexico. Very helpful! I learned so much from this guide just flipping through it before my vacation. Translations & phrasing are easy to understand & repeat. I gave it only 4 stars b/c I needed it to have a more comprehensive Spanish/English dictionary. It did not contain about half of the words I looked up (mainly from street signs, menus, and conversations).

Love the Lonely Planet phrasebooks. tThey're well organized and have handy and useful translations. I always mean to brush up on the language before traveling but end up totally blanking and pantomiming when in country. Thanks, Lonely Planet, for saving copious embarrassment.

It was just what I needed: a small, practical dictionary with some cultural notes for traveling in South America. The pronunciation guide is better than most, and it is easy to navigate. It takes up little space and is light. Glad I got it!

I'm a Cuban American woman who is looking to learn Spanish so that I can eventually visit the country of my culture. This book makes it simple and easy and has all the key phrases that you would need to know when traveling.

We took this phrasebook as well as the Rick Steves phrasebook on a recent trip to Italy. We ended up using the Rick Steves nearly all of the time. It was just better organized and easier to navigate, plus it had more phrases and (for me) better pronunciation guides. The books were actually fairly similar, but we were especially grateful for Rick Steves when we got sick unexpectedly and discovered that the RS book had almost twice the vocabulary for health/medical issues. This is not a bad phrasebook, but if they are a similar price the Rick Steves is better.

The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal: Exploring the Ghost Fleet of the South Pacific, by Robert D. Ballard Rick Archbold

From Booklist

Dozens of battered warships lie beneath the constricted waters off Guadalcanal, justifying the macabre moniker of Iron Bottom Sound. Unseen for 50 years, this submarine battlefield received its first visitor in 1992, aquanaut Robert Ballard. The twisted, encrusted shapes he saw are here spread out with the same lavish pictorial formula used in his enormously popular albums on the Titanic and the Bismarck. Prewar photos of battleships in dress regalia contrast graphically with eerie paintings and photos of shell and torpedo strikes that destroyed them and their crews. Now--as in the moment of foundering during the half dozen sharp, short naval battles around the island--guns aim askew, fatal holes gape wide, and turret plates peel back. The Titanic and the Bismarck--both on maiden voyages--sailed to the deep with ill-fated majesty. But Ballard treats these unheralded ships--American, Australian, and Japanese--with the same technical accuracy and awesome reverence. The author's name alone should trigger demand. Where will Ballard dive next? Jutland? Trafalgar? Gilbert Taylor

I think we sometimes forget that the battle for the island of Guadalcanal, was more than just the marines fighting the japanese army. The us navy took quite a licking in the early stages of this conflict. Initially the japanses navy was superior to our forces. But for us it was a learning process, fortunately we possessed far greater resources than did the japanese empire. So our early errors did not mortally wound us, but the japanese navy was not to be so fortunate. We lost many fine ships in Ironbottom Sound, but so did the japanese. We could replace our losses, but the japanese did not have the same luxury. It must be very interesting to view these sahips now. They are the dark spectors of what was, they did not survive to join in the final victory, but the ships and men who sailed on them, contributed mightely to that victory. JRV

A nicely done piece connecting the history of WWII with the more recent search for the sunken ships in Iron Bottom Sound. A great read particularly if you've also read or listened to the audiobook Torpedo Squadron 8. The photography was excellent. I would have liked to see more photos but that's just me. overall a great read for the minimal price.

The title above is what my great-uncle inscribed on the inside cover of this book. He is the Tommy Morris whose story is told in the pages of this book. Like many more famous sailors and soldiers, Uncle Tommy (who died only two weeks ago after a long decline, for those readers who might be interested)used to tell me and my grandfather (Tommy's brother) that it was impossible for him to think of people as "civilized" having seen how we turn our new discoveries and technology so easily to the unhappy task of killing each other. He also said to me once that his role in the Quincy sinking was that of a "damsel in distress".. which description was follwed by that sort of masculing deep-seated chuckle which only come forth from heroic men who have seen hell on earth.I am biased, but I wer I not, I would still think this an excellent book!Gary Morris

Excellent

Great Book ! In the best shape. I wish to say moore , but I must get back to my GREAT BOOK. Thank you so very much. ART

Well done.

I will say that like most of Ballard's books this is nicely laid out; good sized and with excellent photographs & drawings. Most of the book is taken up by short histories of the various battles that make up the 'Guadalcanal Campaign.' This didn't leave much room for the exploration of the wrecks themselves which gives you a rather rushed feeling despite the good background history.Perhaps this would have been even better as an expanded two volume set.

And amazing short book with pictures and vivid photographs I love it and I always look for Robert Ballard books.
