If you buy this based on the cover showing someone rebuilding or changing the gear ratio on their car, you made a mistake.It's more about different kinds of differentials and basic facts and History.I have to say, it did not do it for me. I wanted something that would teach me how to work on a differential myself, change gears or maybe put in some sort of limited-slip/positraction unit.
Good overview if you are mainly interested in muscle car axles. High performance in this context excludes sports cars (not going to build a Lotus 7 replica with a 12 bolt or Dana 70, that is for sure!) and high performance off road trucks. The rebuilding sections are ok and probably useful, but we'll see when I get into my Impala's axle how many of the hints and tips are useful. Certainly not a shop manual, do not buy with that intent. Very good overview on the subject for someone with limited knowledge who wants to make informed decisions for their muscle car.
I bought this book to supplement the “Differentials: Identification, Restoration, and Repair†manual by Jim Allen & Randy Lyman. While that book covers just about all the differentials from the past to present, this book is dedicated to identifying and building up the latest high performance differentials, so I am satisfied with this manual. You will know what to look for in your quest for the best bang for the buck, and some good HP building tips. I would recommend this book to a gearhead friend.
I feel like i could go in a rebuild a differential now. It covers a lot of how the differential works, which understanding is the best way to troubleshoot. It shows how to do backlash adjustments, which with out pictures is hard to grasp.i gave it 4 stars because i think it could be used as a guide in the workshop, obviously the desire to cover multiple types of differentials means you have to weed out what applies to your differential.
this book does not talk at all about the front dana 60 just the back. and i i bought this book in hopes that when i worked on my tereaflex dana 60 i would find what i needed.
Great book to start with. Had this book for about three or four years now and remembering back when I was just learning. This book helped a lot as an introduction to rear ends. Really wish it went into a lot more Dana axles and transfer cases, but I get that it has to cover more common axles for cars and light trucks. Very happy that I own this book and occasionally pull it off the shelf to skim though when I'm on the crapper.
Definitely a worthwhile read for those seeking to increase their foundation of genuine gearhead knowledge. I would have given the full 5 stars had discussion of the various LSDs (especially on the cam-style, my own interests being road race oriented) been a bit more involved, but admittedly the author does a good job in covering a lot of ground here. If you're hanging on this particular enthusiast's recommendation, I'd add it to your cart.
I already had a good understanding of rear differentials before this but it has filled in any grey areas I had. As others have said he tends to lean to the Ford side of the house, which was good for me because so do I. There is still tons of info about mopar and chevy rear ends and even some exotic stuff. I would say its a great buy whether you have rebuilt several differentials or are just a beginner trying to learn your first one.
