I love Harlan Coben novels but this one is awful. Usually his stand alone novels are twisty and fascinating but this one is pretty boring and unimaginative. Our protagonist Simon is desperate to find his oldest child who is a junkie and get her help. His attempt to find her and find out what led her to drugs in the first place is pretty straightforward. Interspersed throughout the novel are the perspectives of Ash, an assassin, and Elena a retired FBI agent who is now a PI. The chapters with Ash are mostly horrible. His friend is mixed up in a cult and the writing is nowhere near what I expect with Coben. Elena is a very likeable character but way too introspective for her role in the novel. Eventually all three characters will of course intersect. Unfortunately it’s pretty obvious where this is going. There’s no big surprise reveal in this book. Coben also unnecessarily expounds repeatedly on the state of the country which feels very out of place in the book. There was no reason to bring in politics except to make it clear he was doing it. This book feels very phoned in. Unfortunately it looks like one of my favorite authors will no longer be preordered to my kindle.
Another great thriller with plot twists right up to the end! I have to force myself to stop reading for a while so I don't lose my job!! Terrific writing, evocative without going over the top, tense....perfect.
I have been a devoted reader of Harlan Coben since the Myron Bolivar series. I enjoy other writers, but, for me, none can compare. I wanted to read this book slowly to make it last. I couldn't stop reading. Finished it in one long day. Now I will have to wait impatiently for the next fabulous masterpiece. I loved Myron and company, but the later stand alones are in a class of their own. Like one's children, I can't choose a favorite. They all are! My sincere compliments to my very favorite author.
With his first sentence Harlan Coben ties you to your reading chair in this story of a father searching for his missing daughter. Paige Greene has left her life at college under the influence of drug addiction and a drug-dealing boyfriend. Simon Greene hasn't seen her in six months when he finally catches sight of her in Central Park. Paige is now a bedraggled and glassy-eyed junkie who runs from him when he tries to talk to her. After losing sight of her Simon goes to extraordinary lengths to find her again and bring her home. This is no straightforward search-and-rescue story though -- there are twists and turns through cults, conspiracies, murder, social media, and DNA testing. As with most of Coben's novels, every time you think he's going to zig he zags, right up until the end. It sure kept me reading! I gave it 4.5 stars -- would have been 5 but for a couple of minor plot questions that probably no one else would notice. I recommend this book -- plan to stay up late!
As usual,Harlan has done an outstanding performance w this book. New characters which initially off putting; ( miss Myron n BFF) . The twists just kept coming and very action packed. This book was anticipated s baited breath. I was Not disappointed . I hope neither will.u
There are too many ways to spoil the read so I'm just going to say it is the best book I've read in the mystery category in a long time.
I read this book in one sitting, couldn’t put it down. I tried to read slowly, to make it last, didn’t work. Another wonderful book by my favorite author. Read it!
Mr. Coben never fails to write a wonderful story. This book has it all! I found that this book is different than all the all out action he usually write. Don't misunderstand, this book is full of action but is a very emotional book.
