I LOVED Baby Sitters's Club as a kid. I recently found a huge stack of the originals at a used book store and picked them up for my daughter. She was almost 10 at the time. We started to read them together and she just couldn't get into them. I noticed how boy crazy the girls were in the books as we read. She is not interested in that at all yet (which is fine by me!!). But some how the graphic novels are a bit different, they focus much more on the friendships and other relationships. It's perfect and she's re-read these 4 many times! I only wish more were available.

My 10 year old and 12 year old love these books...I hope to purchase more sets in the future.

Sadly we received our set with two #4 books, and no #3.

My teenage daughter loved these books and now has passed it down to her younger sister. They both love them.

Fun, light, enjoyable read. 9 year old daughter loves these books. Sometimes we read them together with voices for each character. I really enjoy the entrepreneurial discussions about how to run an effective club. Fun to see the female characters run their own little business!

My daughter That hates reading loved reading these! She read them all in a week and got 80-100% on all of her test at school

My daughter was so happy to get these as soon as they were released.

This series is my granddaughter's favorite! She was delighted Christmas morning. Her age: 11Her daddy, (my son), read this same series when he was her age and loved them!

The William Hoy Story: How a Deaf Baseball Player Changed the Game, by Nancy Churnin

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3—This picture book biography demonstrates how an extraordinary deaf player from the early days of baseball made a lasting contribution to the game. The ambitions of William Hoy (1862–1961) were clear from the start. The boy thought of little other than baseball and practiced tirelessly in hopes of playing on a team. Achieving his goal brought challenges that he didn't expect, but giving up was not an option. Hoy realized that better communication was needed and knew just the way to do it. While he was not the only person to introduce hand signals to the game, he did popularize their use among players and fans. The book is well told and charmingly illustrated in a semirealistic style that conveys Hoy's emotions. Those who enjoyed Audrey Vernick's Brothers at Bat: The True Story of an Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team (Clarion, 2012) will want to read this engaging biography. VERDICT This is the largely unknown story of a differently abled athlete's valuable addition to the great American pastime.—Paige Mellinger, Gwinnett County Public Libraries, Lillburn, GA

An inspiring story of perseverance and the value of a "can do" attitude. Beautifully told and illustrated for the young reader, it encourages children to set their goals high regardless of the challenges they face. This remarkable man, born when Lincoln was president and still active when JFK was in office, made his mark in major league baseball. It's a marvelous biography thoughtfully crafted for children by an author who clearly found much to admire in this extraordinary man. A gem of a book!

This is a unique and special book on so many levels. It is entertaining to children and adults alike with the story of the incredible William Hoy a baseball player "who just happened to be deaf," and how he overcame this disability to be a star. It is the story of a time in history that children should learn about and appreciate. The telling of the story is compelling along with colorful and outstanding illustrations to emphasize the plot. Finally the author has included a summary for adults about Hoy's story and a timeline for history buffs. Librarians, teachers, parents, children and baseball fans can all enjoy this story of a very important but little known baseball player. I look forward to more stories from this author!

I absolutely love this book, and all the children in my life love it also. Nancy Churnin is a master storyteller when it comes to important non-fiction stories. Although I am a big baseball fan and was amazed to learn that many of the baseball signs originated with William Hoy, you don't need to be a baseball fan to enjoy this. You just need to be a fan of wonderful, well written stories!

Heartwarming. From the moment that William picked up that ball in the beginning of the book all the way through till the crowd is giving the silent applause; I was hooked. This story appeals to the sports lover, the underdog, the indomitable attitude, or any child facing adversity.

Wonderfully written and delightfully illustrated, my ten year old baseball star loved it. Story is well sculpted and the character well developed. I should like to have seen a little more about the authorities acceptance or resistance to the use of signs and signals. This is an outstanding read for any child.

What a great story to be told! I had no idea about William Hoy until now. Read it to my children, and they absolutely loved it. I absolutely loved it! I recently read this to my 5th and 6th grade students. Same response. Brought up many things to discuss---baseball, sign language, perseverance, treating people unkindly, etc. Churnin is a wonderful narrative nonfiction writer, and I can't wait to read more of her books.

I read a review of this book in the Dallas Morning News. I had never heard of William Hoy. One of my grandsons is a real baseball fan, even at 10 years of age., so I ordered us both a copy. It is a great story and we both enjoyed it. I reviewed it at a Book Club meeting. Several others ordered their own copies. We were all inspired!

I've enjoyed reading this with my two young children, and they often pick it out for bed-time reading. Great fun learning about a unique part of baseball history while also cheering for William Hoy as his story unfolds.

I bought this for my child because it's a required reading in his school. I read it. It's about family, family secrets, and how families, neighbors, and people handle and cope with something considered illegal by the government, but personal for families. I like it hoping that after my son and his classmates finish reading it, it will help them realize that the world is not black or white.

Excellent book! My daughter (10yrs old) has to read this book for school. She is not into reading but found herself wanting to keep reading this. I read the book with her to help w her book report and I thoroughly enjoyed it too.

This is a frequently read aloud novel at our middle school! Students are appalled that third children are outlawed in this future USA and will be rooting for Luke from the first chapter. And everyone who picks up this book will be caught off guard by plot twists at least once during this action packed, mysterious book one to a fabulous 7 book series. Most highly recommended by this librarian for readers in grades 5-8.

What an intriguing concept! I've read Haddix's The Missing series, and this was the first book I've read in the Shadow Children series. My daughter (5th grade) and I read this together. It is fascinating to think about how limited resources and an ever expanding population might influence government policies in the future, and how certain policies might be implemented and have unintended consequences. It was also thought provoking to see how the impact of the policies for middle-class families were so different than for upper-class families. The end was an unexpected twist.

Sort of a "boring story," according to my daughter who said for more than half of the story, the character is stuck in his house without anything major happening. Still, she was intrigued with the beginning and the ending wrapped up nicely.

I bought this book for my granddaughter. She has to read it through the summer as suggested by her 7 the grade Teacher. It is a requirement for all students entering 7th grade. I would say it is a good read.

Summer reading for granddaughter

Very well written story of secret defiance of the authority denying more than two children per family. The third child of one family finds a kindred spirit in Jen, the hidden daughter of a neighbor who is a rebel of sorts. She educates and tries to lead the illegal children to freedom. What results from that effort gives our character the strength to take his next step to reach that freedom. Held my interest and strong characters.

Review

Longlisted for the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction Named one of the 'Best Books of 2018' by NPR, The Washington Post, Buzzfeed, People, Time, Amazon, Entertainment Weekly, Bustle, Newsweek, the A.V. Club, Christian Science Monitor, Southern Living, and Refinery 29. "Circe,' [is] a bold and subversive retelling of the goddess's story that manages to be both epic and intimate in its scope, recasting the most infamous female figure from the Odyssey as a hero in her own right."―Alexandra Alter, New York Times"One of the most amazing qualities of this novel [is]: We know how everything here turns out - we've known it for thousands of years - and yet in Miller's lush reimagining, the story feels harrowing and unexpected. The feminist light she shines on these events never distorts their original shape; it only illuminates details we hadn't noticed before."―Ron Charles, Washington Post"[Miller] gives voice to Circe as a multifaceted and evolving character...'Circe' is very pleasurable to read, combining lively versions of familiar tales and snippets of other, related standards with a highly psychologized, redemptive and ultimately exculpatory account of the protagonist herself."―Claire Messud, New York Times Book Review"The story of Circe's entanglement with Odysseus lasts far beyond the narrative of "The Odyssey," making for compelling material to revisit. But ultimately it's as a character that Circe stands apart....Through her elegant, psychologically acute prose, Miller gives us a rich female character who inhabits the spaces in between."―Colleen Abel, Minneapolis Star Tribune"Miller's lush, gold-lit novel - told from the perspective of the witch whose name in Greek has echoes of a hawk and a weaver's shuttle - paints another picture: of a fierce goddess who, yes, turns men into pigs, but only because they deserve it."―NPR.org "so vivid, so layered, you could get lost in it... Whether or not you think you like Greek Mythology, this is just great storytelling. It feels cinematic."― NPR's Here & Now"Spellbinding..Miller has created a daring feminist take on a classic narrative; although the setting is a mystical world of gods, monsters, and nymphs, the protagonist at its heart is like any of us."―O Magazine"Miller's spell builds slowly, but by the last page you'll be in awe. In prose of dreamlike simplicity, she reimagines the myth of Circe."―People"Miller, with her academic bona fides and born instinct for storytelling, seamlessly grafts modern concepts of selfhood and independence to her mystical reveries of smoke and silver, nectar and bones."―Entertainment Weekly

Brief summary, no spoilers.I know it may be odd to talk about “spoilers” when this is the story of a mythological character, but there are reasons for that and I will explain in the review. This book is told from the point of view of Circe, daughter of the sun Titan Helios. Her mother was Perse, a sea nymph who was the granddaughter of the Titan Oceanos. We mainly know of Circe from the Odyssey and her interactions with Odysseus. She was known as a sorceress who lived on an island and turned men into pigs. We know from the Odyssey that Circe was often seen working at a huge loom surrounded by dangerous animals such as wolves and lions, yet they were all under her control. We also know from the Odyssey that Odysseus - by virtue of his wiles - not only avoids Circe’s sorcery but beds her as well. When he leaves she gives him advice on how to survive the perils on his seaward journey home to his homeland of Ithaca, such as Scylla and Charybdis, so he can reunite with his beloved wife Penelope and son Telemachus. So why did I like this book so much? Well, stand back, because I’m about to gush.I am a big fan of Greek mythology, and I was a big fan of this author’s previous book, The Song of Achilles. Yet this one was even better.Circe was not a major figure in the Odyssey; in fact when I first opened the book I realized I got her mixed up with Calypso. But I won’t make that mistake anymore. This minor character has now become my favorite character of all thanks to this author’s brilliant work.Because this book is told from Circe’s point of view, we get to intimately know her - not just her history and story but her thoughts as well. The reason this is so important is because we come to empathize with Circe. We tend to think of the Greek Gods as so fickle and often cruel - and indeed they are often depicted that way - yet with Circe, we meet a goddess who is so human and so very, very likable. The reason I made the “no spoilers” comment at the start, is because Circe’s experiences include her meeting and interacting with various other figures from Greek myth, and it’s a big part of the enjoyment of this novel to experience it the way the author intended, without knowing what is going to happen next.I took a few days to read this book but that was not because it was a slow read. Just the opposite; I was so happy while reading it that I would stop myself after each chapter just to pace myself so it wouldn’t end too soon.I highly (obviously) recommend this to any fans of Greek mythology and for sure to anyone who enjoyed The Song of Achilles. But you don’t have to know much about the Odyssey or Greek mythology to love this book. Although this novel is about a god, it’s really a story about what it means to be human.

{My Thoughts}What Worked For MeA Classic Tale Reimagined – Taking a classic story and reinventing it with a modern twist is nothing new. We see it time after time, but the usual reimagining places the characters and plot in a contemporary setting as the story plays out. With Circe, Madeline Miller kept the characters and the setting, and instead shifted the focus, placing it solely on Circe. Those of you with a background in mythology will see many, many elements from classic Greek mythology (especially The Odyssey) popping up in this book. However, if you’ve lived under a rock and never even knew there was such a thing as mythology it won’t matter. Miller gives you everything you need to know and she does it seamlessly.A Woman with Attitude – If you’re anything like me, you will come to adore Circe, the book and the woman. Born into one of the two most powerful families of gods, Circe adored her father, Helios, but never quite measured up. Where her siblings were gorgeous and powerful from an early age, Circe was plain and seemingly powerless. Tormented by her own family, Circe grew more and more fascinated with mortals. Falling in love with one, brought out her previously unknown powers of witchcraft.“I was too wild to feel shame. It was true. I would not just uproot the world, but tear it, burn it, do any evil I could to keep Glaucos by my side. But what stayed most in my mind was the look on my grandmother’s face when I’d said that word, pharmaka. It was not a look I know well among the gods.”This girl had gumption and she used her new power to punish her rival, creating a monster all came to feared. But, she paid a price for going too far. Circe was banished to the small island of Aiaia for eternity. This is where the book Circe really took off for me. On the island, I found it impossible not to admire and root for this woman who year after year, century after century, faced her fears, honed her powers, and learned to stand up for herself.“She was gone. But I said it anyway, to that great empty room and my son’s dreaming ears: “You do not know what I can do.”Soap Opera of the Gods – You might think a story of a woman alone on an island could get dull, but you would be wrong. Circe lived a lonely life, but was not without the occasional visitor, many bringing adventure and challenges to her life. Hermes flitted in and out with news and gossip from the worlds of gods and mortals. Her sister, Pasiphae, granted Circe temporary exile to help deal with her little Minotaur problem. Shipwrecked sailors soon discovered the wrath of Circe. And then came Odysseus, perhaps her most well known visitor, bringing to Circe a lasting love she was willing to die for. The level of drama never failed! That House – I really can’t say any more, but for those who have read Circe: I want that house! What Didn’tAbsolutely EVERYTHING worked for me in Circe!{The Final Assessment}Madeline Miller is definitely a writer to admire. Reinventing the life of a minor goddess into a remarkable woman while remaining faithful to the original mythology can be no small feat. Miller did it in the best way possible, by knowing her star character and sticking to her story. From start to finish Circe was all about Circe, no long tangents, no veering off into some other god’s story. Just Circe: her life, her feelings, her mistakes, her heart, her choices. I haven’t yet read Millers’s debut, Song of Achilles, but I will. I’m already looking forward to that next trip to ancient Greece. If it’s anything like Circe, I’m sure to find the journey immersive, entertaining, exciting, everything! Just incase I haven’t been clear, I loved Circe. She will be one of my top ten books this year. Grade: A

This book caught me by surprise. I was swept up in the tale of Circe, a goddess, and amazed by the simple truths of human life revealed. Madeline Miller captured both the beauty and bitter futility of being human, and I will be philosophically turning these thoughts over in my head for years to come. Timeless masterpiece that will only become sweeter with each read.

I’ve been waiting for Circe since I closed the endpapers of The Song of Achilles. Miller has the expert’s eye and a storyteller’s touch - a female storyteller at that, which makes her remarkable among the other writers and rewriters of the classic Greek tales. Here, her gifts are used in telling the story of Circe, child of Helios and one of the lesser gods, the first witch of the world. She spins a tale of bravery, gullibility, fear and courage; she tells the tale of a goddess who has the heart of a mortal. I don’t want to give anything away and thus ruin Miller’s spellbinding tales, but it’s not a spoiler to say that I was astounded by the ways in which Miller was able to imbue her heroine with the same human frailties and fears as those of us mere mortals: the love of a mother, the burning shame of disgrace, the slow and fast at once finding of ones identity and center, the ways in which we all reach for more than perhaps we know, the giddy ness of losing ones fear and with it, the donning of grace and gratitude.Circe’s tales are big, and they’re writ large here. And yet they feel so real and common even as they burn with a strange fire.Miller deserves to be mentioned among the greats. I look forward to her next creation with excitement and of course more than a little adoration.Give yourself the beautiful opportunity to see Circe as she has never been seen. Really enjoying the bible study book with a group of women. Enlightening on what true biblical hospitality is and what we are commanded to do. A great way to open your heart and home to Godliness and loving your neighbor.

This Bible Study was such a good challenge for me. Everytime I hear, Hospitality...I ran away from hosting in my house. I am not a hostess. However, this book widens up the doors to what exactly Hospitality actually means! So thankful I was pushed beyond my comfort zone and am able now to look at the Whole Picture, the way Christ wants Hospitality to look like. Thx

Love how this has opened my eyes to teue hospitality

First, I really don't like saying negative things about something someone has presumably worked very hard on, but I'm speaking up because the high-star rating was misleading, in my opinion. My curiosity is piqued enough to know how the story ends so I plan on reading the second book, but a lot of the previous critiques with lower stars are right on. The book feels like close but no cigar in a way. The writing is good but McHugh seems like she could be really good - like the skill and talent is there. Probably the biggest annoyance I had with the book is the female lead character. She's the sterotypical auburn-haired beauty but she's largely pathetic. She is so oblivious to her jackass of a boyfriend that it's very difficult to relate to her if you're a no-nonsense kind of woman yourself. Gavin is the package, of course, and I appreciate that McHugh tries to show the realism in the characters, but there's some kind of umph missing with everyone. Not sure what it is.

I have very little respect for the main character of this book. I really wanted to like Emily. I felt bad for her she was in an abusive relationship and didn’t seem to realize it. From the beginning there were red flags everywhere in her relationship with Dillon. He was a jerk often to her and her friends with subtle digs he played off as jokes. He tried to control her job, her friends, her clothing and generally try to make her feel indebted to him. And it bugs the crap out of me that she wouldn’t even listen to her friends about it. So yeah it tries to make you basically feel bad for her and you know want to root for her. However it never quite made it for me instead I just felt like she was really stupid. Now don’t get me wrong I know he came into her life during a time when she was grieving and basically kind of groomed her to feel indebted to him. But her character otherwise is you know kind of portrayed in a different way so her general spinelessness when it came to him pissed me off. However even then I was sympathetic to her up until the point where she takes him back after she finally admits to loving Gavin and getting with him. She had already decided that she wasn’t taking Dillon back but the minute that she thinks Gavin cheated on her she takes back her abuser who she had already not plan to take back before she even got with Gavin. That was the moment I lost all respect for her and any sympathy. I would rate this book one star but I was feeling generous and gave it two. It’s hard to like a book when you don’t respect the characters.

3.5This book isn't a stand alone. It may also cause triggers for some readers of mental and physical domestic violence. There's references to cheating, and little instances. But they're needed to make plot go round.Brainwashed. Doormat. Naive. Those few words described out female, Emily. She's young so I let a lot of her actions slide. She's in a relationship with Dillon, who I'd like to beat down and throat punch. Can you tell I have quite a few anger issues with these characters??Emily moves to New York, after her mother dies. She met Dillon while she was in college through a friend. They continued to date long distance, til now. Little by little Dillon controls Emily from her dress attire, to her choice in friends. Emily is just so thankful for all he's done for her and her family, she makes excuses for every circumstance. You end up wanting to throat punch her too. Then a long comes Blake. He's friends in their little social circle. He's so sweet and alpha at the same time. He's been through some relationship issues in the past. But I think it's made him stronger and more aware. There were a few slow spots, but other wise the words flowed, and the characters spoke to me.This type of book usually isn't my cup of tea. I normally read Dark and angst books. So to me this was kinda more towards a light fluffy read that ends on a cliffhanger. Book two is out at the time of this review. This is my first time reading this author, and I'm off to read book two.

Whenever I get asked who my book boyfriend is, I always- ALWAYS say the one and only Gavin Blake. I met him over 2 years ago- long before Gail McHugh got picked up by Atria books and exploded all over the book world. In that time, no one has been able to knock him from the top of my list (though some have tried, very hard). So I wanted to go back and do something I haven't done in years, mostly because of time...re-read- and fall in love all over again! All I can say is wow! There were so many little details I didn't remember about my favorite leading man. But as I read Collide the one thing that remained true was how shmexy Gavin is because of how much he loved Emily. It was all consuming and heartbreaking and beautiful and made me want a bottle of wine. It was the small, quiet moments between them that strengthened and solidified their love as timeless. Now that Emily Cooper- I went back and forth on my feelings for her. I felt for her, her situation was sad and Dillon used it to his advantage (the big jerk). Here was this shy, sweet woman who had been through hell and back and was just getting back to some sort of normal when Gavin had to come in and sweep her off her feet. And thank goodness for that- because when Dillon showed his true colors I wanted to jump into my kindle and give him a karate chop! There was so much back and forth between Gavin and Emily that my heart couldn't take the angst at times. They so obviously belonged together. But it wasn't all drama and tears. There were a lot of sweet and funny moments along the way. And those two really knew how to steam up the sheets, and the shower and the wall....And that final showdown between her and Dillon had me with my jaw on the floor!Gail McHugh, wove a tale of love, lies, heartbreak and hope. The characters are easy to relate to and I found myself cheering for them. And with them when things went their way. But that ending, my heart is in my throat and I can not wait to see what is in store for Emily and Gavin next!
