First, I really don't like saying negative things about something someone has presumably worked very hard on, but I'm speaking up because the high-star rating was misleading, in my opinion. My curiosity is piqued enough to know how the story ends so I plan on reading the second book, but a lot of the previous critiques with lower stars are right on. The book feels like close but no cigar in a way. The writing is good but McHugh seems like she could be really good - like the skill and talent is there. Probably the biggest annoyance I had with the book is the female lead character. She's the sterotypical auburn-haired beauty but she's largely pathetic. She is so oblivious to her jackass of a boyfriend that it's very difficult to relate to her if you're a no-nonsense kind of woman yourself. Gavin is the package, of course, and I appreciate that McHugh tries to show the realism in the characters, but there's some kind of umph missing with everyone. Not sure what it is.

I have very little respect for the main character of this book. I really wanted to like Emily. I felt bad for her she was in an abusive relationship and didn’t seem to realize it. From the beginning there were red flags everywhere in her relationship with Dillon. He was a jerk often to her and her friends with subtle digs he played off as jokes. He tried to control her job, her friends, her clothing and generally try to make her feel indebted to him. And it bugs the crap out of me that she wouldn’t even listen to her friends about it. So yeah it tries to make you basically feel bad for her and you know want to root for her. However it never quite made it for me instead I just felt like she was really stupid. Now don’t get me wrong I know he came into her life during a time when she was grieving and basically kind of groomed her to feel indebted to him. But her character otherwise is you know kind of portrayed in a different way so her general spinelessness when it came to him pissed me off. However even then I was sympathetic to her up until the point where she takes him back after she finally admits to loving Gavin and getting with him. She had already decided that she wasn’t taking Dillon back but the minute that she thinks Gavin cheated on her she takes back her abuser who she had already not plan to take back before she even got with Gavin. That was the moment I lost all respect for her and any sympathy. I would rate this book one star but I was feeling generous and gave it two. It’s hard to like a book when you don’t respect the characters.

3.5This book isn't a stand alone. It may also cause triggers for some readers of mental and physical domestic violence. There's references to cheating, and little instances. But they're needed to make plot go round.Brainwashed. Doormat. Naive. Those few words described out female, Emily. She's young so I let a lot of her actions slide. She's in a relationship with Dillon, who I'd like to beat down and throat punch. Can you tell I have quite a few anger issues with these characters??Emily moves to New York, after her mother dies. She met Dillon while she was in college through a friend. They continued to date long distance, til now. Little by little Dillon controls Emily from her dress attire, to her choice in friends. Emily is just so thankful for all he's done for her and her family, she makes excuses for every circumstance. You end up wanting to throat punch her too. Then a long comes Blake. He's friends in their little social circle. He's so sweet and alpha at the same time. He's been through some relationship issues in the past. But I think it's made him stronger and more aware. There were a few slow spots, but other wise the words flowed, and the characters spoke to me.This type of book usually isn't my cup of tea. I normally read Dark and angst books. So to me this was kinda more towards a light fluffy read that ends on a cliffhanger. Book two is out at the time of this review. This is my first time reading this author, and I'm off to read book two.

Whenever I get asked who my book boyfriend is, I always- ALWAYS say the one and only Gavin Blake. I met him over 2 years ago- long before Gail McHugh got picked up by Atria books and exploded all over the book world. In that time, no one has been able to knock him from the top of my list (though some have tried, very hard). So I wanted to go back and do something I haven't done in years, mostly because of time...re-read- and fall in love all over again! All I can say is wow! There were so many little details I didn't remember about my favorite leading man. But as I read Collide the one thing that remained true was how shmexy Gavin is because of how much he loved Emily. It was all consuming and heartbreaking and beautiful and made me want a bottle of wine. It was the small, quiet moments between them that strengthened and solidified their love as timeless. Now that Emily Cooper- I went back and forth on my feelings for her. I felt for her, her situation was sad and Dillon used it to his advantage (the big jerk). Here was this shy, sweet woman who had been through hell and back and was just getting back to some sort of normal when Gavin had to come in and sweep her off her feet. And thank goodness for that- because when Dillon showed his true colors I wanted to jump into my kindle and give him a karate chop! There was so much back and forth between Gavin and Emily that my heart couldn't take the angst at times. They so obviously belonged together. But it wasn't all drama and tears. There were a lot of sweet and funny moments along the way. And those two really knew how to steam up the sheets, and the shower and the wall....And that final showdown between her and Dillon had me with my jaw on the floor!Gail McHugh, wove a tale of love, lies, heartbreak and hope. The characters are easy to relate to and I found myself cheering for them. And with them when things went their way. But that ending, my heart is in my throat and I can not wait to see what is in store for Emily and Gavin next!
