The novel is well written but it is based on a flawed premise. A large meteor strike hits the Washington DC and Chesapeake Bay area and ejects enough water vapor into the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect and eventually ‘boil the oceans’. While water vapor is a greenhouse gas per se, it is not capable of forcing a runaway effect as described because its presence in the atmosphere is self limiting via precipitation. The author recognizes that there would be initially be a global winter effect, dropping the global temperature by over 2 degrees prior to the supposed runaway effect and ignores the consequence that the water vapor ejected into the atmosphere would precipitate as snow and rain. Ordinarily, I can suspend disbelief when reading sci-fi but this is such a whopper that I could not recommend the book.

I recently finished reading Mary Robinette Kowal's wonderful new novel The Calculating Stars. It's set in an alternate 1952 in which the US has launched the first space satellite, opening the space race. Then, Washington DC and most of the East Coast of the US gets obliterated by a meteorite. The climate changes from that impact threaten to render Earth uninhabitable, making getting to Mars a priority.The novel is written in first person, and our narrator is Elma York, mathematician and wife of Nathaniel York. She is a computer - AKA a human mathematician hired to compute stuff, in this case space launch trajectories. She's also a former WASP, a group of women hired to ferry military airplanes around in WWII. This comes in handy, as her piloting skills allow her and her husband to survive the impact.She eventually decides that she wants to be am astronaut, and that's where the conflict is. This is the 1950s, and women are supposed to be in the kitchen, not in space. Oh, and Elma suffers from anxiety, for which she is eventually proscribed Miltown.This set of circumstances makes for a fascinating read. Mary gets to explore sexism, racism (blacks were computers too) and mental health while writing a gripping and entertaining book. It's very eye-opening for me, a straight white dude, to see the problems facing people like Elma - people who can and do contribute greatly.Mary takes a few liberties with history, notably having Dewey defeat Truman in 1948. (Well, that and the asteroid.) However, one thing she is true to - most of the math that got men into orbit was done by hand, mostly by women. It's a fascinating detail. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

What a start! Giant meteorite, east coast wiped out, the world doomed by coming nuclear summer - the oceans will boil! Whoa! I was all in. Then we follow all of that with...well, the the domestic life of the protagonist and her gal pal pilot friends. Huh? Will she get to be an astronaut?? (You want to take a guess?)It's really not a badly written exploration of life in the 50's, and the struggles women and people of color had just to be taken seriously, but that novel could have been written just as well without the world threatening opening. It just seemed light and trivial. Antisemitism even pops up later in the book - for about a page - but then, "Oops, never mind, I didn't mean to be antisemitic. Sorry!." "Oh, you were just being a grump. We forgive you! Group hug!"It just came across as too light in general. I doubt I'd bother with any other books in the series.

I just finished listening to the Audible version of THE CALCULATING STARS by Mary Robinette Kowal, narrated by the author herself, and—let me tell you—her performance is MASTERFUL.I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and MRK’s fluid transitions between well-developed and nuanced character voices—many with distinctive ethnicities and accents—is among the best of the best. Her performance really enhances the experience of this well-researched alternative history set at the dawn of the space program in the 1950’s, when a devastating meteorite impact triggers an extinction event that catapults humankind into a space race to colonize Mars. This novel is as much a tribute to the unsung heroes of our own nascent space program, many of whom happened to be women, as it is a solid and entertaining story.

This is one of my new favorite novels, a brilliant alternate history of the space race. I was spellbound from the first page with the story of a brilliant mathematician, physicist, and pilot who desires with all she has to become a true lady astronaut.In this alternate history, the space race must proceed at a rapid pace because of a meteor that destroyed millions of people, the aftereffects which will likely make Earth uninhabitable in the not-so-distant future. There are familiar historical figures--Martin Luther King Jr., while never appearing in scene, is referenced and plays a key role--and fictitious characters as well.I liked that this was "hard science fiction," with very specific and accurate details about the technology (the author actually took trips to NASA and had astronauts critique her book). And yet the science never became incomprehensible--it was accessible and engaging.There were many well-crafted subplots--the quest for female rights and racial equality. Like Hidden Figures, it focused on people that have often been ignored and yet have played indispensable roles in history. The voice was refreshing and engaging. As a cool writing technique, there was a very interesting shift from past tense to present tense near the end of the book.This novel transformed my appreciation of flight--both flight within and without our atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Ok, so I also just read the amazingly beautiful and tragically heart breaking political drama Days Of Hate by one Mr Ales Kot and just moving and somber art by the master Danijel Zezelj and published by Image Comics, now I just need to state I love this creative team they have both been responsible for some of my favorite comics in recent years and to see then work together is kind of a dream come true for me, and the story they tell here is just incredible, the comic is billed as a dystopian fiction, but I see it as a history lesson from the near future as it uses recent events as the back drop to a divesting and hopeless world that this book inhabits, and no I'm not going to go into detail about the story for this one, as I truly believe it's something every one should read and perceive by themselves, all I will tell you is that this is a comic that needs to be read. I have been a fan of books like this for a long time I love comics like Young Terrorists, DMZ, CalExit etc, but without a doubt this comic is in an amazing and brutal league of its own!

I love DAYS of HATE can not wait to see how it all ends.

Dystopian graphic novel with queer women main characters, and it's So. Good. I. Can't. Even. In the United States, 2022, two women are on opposite sides of the struggle against ruling the white supremacist police state. Huian Xing is a bi Chinese-American architect cooperating (kinda) with the government to track down her ex-wife, now-revolutionary terrorist, Amanda. The book follows each woman's story as Amanda crosses the country carrying out her missions and Huian is subjected to increasing pressure by a government agent. The art is foreboding and lovely, with these muted tones and so much black that it sometimes seems like stained glass, only without any brightness (metaphor intentional). Huian just seems so sad, and as she tells the agent the story of how her marriage ended, we find out why. Kot had me second guessing my understanding of what's going on multiple times, in such a good way. Can't wait for the second book!

Ales Kot's writing is hit-or-miss for me, but this one is a homerun. This book exemplifies stellar writing: great characterization, solid plot, and realistic dialogue. The art fits the story perfectly as well. If you read comics as escapist art, this book isn't for you; this is a near-future take on where our divided society seems to be heading and could easily be a story ripped from the headlines.

I enjoyed volume one. This story is a terrifying glimpse of what could happen in a hate fueled future. Unfortunately, the climate in the U.S. nowadays makes this story more plausible.

Great subject which reminds us that our yearning is yet another proof of the future we have waiting for us on the other side of death.

This book deeply resonated with Truth and Hope despite my obvious lack. I highly recommend it!

I have found this book to be Biblical and so truthfully written. It has helped me to understand a lot about life at my late age as a Christian.

First chapter disappointed me, but it got better as I went along, and got really good toward the end.

Yearning: Living Between How It Is and How It Ought to Be Yearning is a "must read" for the person who is serious about living for God. One thing that stands out is his question: "Do we love God for who He is or for what He does for us?" Drink from the well of the author's compassionate wisdom. Read and re-read this book.

I've been having a lot of problems of late. So my pastor gave me this book to read. When he did, he said that some people he had given it to loved it while others hated it. And I can understand why there is such a diverse reaction to it.Basically, I can sum up this book in two sentences:1. God never promised you a rose garden.2. What God has promised you is Himself.More specifically, it is Barnes thesis the God has never promised that those who trust in Him will have happy, fulfilled lives. He does not promise that things will go well with you. He does not promise that your health will remain good, that your finances will not fail, that if you're single you won't be lonely, that if you're married, your marriage will not fail, or that He will protect you from any of the other myriad of things that can go wrong in life. Problems will come to the Christian just as they do to the non-Christian.What makes this book particularly discouraging is that Martin is saying that when things go wrong you cannot trust God that "things will work out." They just might not work out. Things might just keep getting worse. So Martin completely disagrees with the "health and wealth gospel" that is preached by many.Even more, Martin disagrees with the "self-fulfillment gospel" that is also often preached. As the Gospel is presented today, it often is given as a way for people to find meaning, purpose, or fulfillment in life. But Martin says that this is a misconstruing of the Gospel. In this fallen world, a lack of fulfillment is "normal," and becoming a Christian is not going to change this.As the back cover of the book states, "In this book, Barnes suggests we weren't created to be whole or complete. With a fresh reading of the early chapters of Genesis, he says that much of our pain and disillusionment arises from wrong expectations of the gospel and of life."However, Martin states that when we suffer, God Himself is our only "hope." In fact, it is only when we are suffering that we can really experience God's grace. Quoting again from the back cover, "[Martin] helps us see how our needs and limitations are gifts, the best opportunities we have to receive God's grace."Some quotes from the book will help to bring this idea out:"Our hope is ultimately rooted in God, not in what he can do for us" (p.131)."Our saving hope is not that we are spared from experiencing the pain of loss. Jesus never hurries to save us from that. Our hope is simply in Jesus himself, who is greater than that for which we had hoped" (p.134).The last two pages sum up the book very well:"Now, return with me to the long line of broken lives waiting to receive Communion on Christmas Eve. In holding up the body of Christ, what hope do I give them for next year? Does the broken body promise that things will get better if they just hang on? In the moment in which my eye catches theirs, do I wink as if to say, "Yes, but soon God will fix it all if you only have faith? No. Absolutely not....What I hold up that night is the hope that God has found them. If they can see that, if even for a moment, it is enough. Then everything has changed. Nothing may be different, but those who have realized that they journey with God perceive everything differently. A bit more of the unpredictable light of Christ has broken into the darkness that surrounds us all" (pp. 180, 181).So what is my opinion of this book? I like the reference in the last sentence quoted above to Christ's "light" shining in the "darkness" given I direct a ministry called "Darkness to Light." But beyond that, I'm not really sure.In a way this book is depressing. I would like to think that as my life crumbles around me I can trust God to turn things around. But this book is saying that's not the case. Things just might get worse, not better. My health, finances, and other aspects of my life just might continue to get worse.I would like to think that I can trust God to give me some direction or meaning in life. But again, this book is saying that's not the case. My life just might continue to be directionless and meaningless.To say that God is my "hope" sounds good, but it is really difficult to grab onto such a nebulous concept in the mist of struggles. But when everything is going wrong, such a nebulous hope is about all that is left.To trust in Christ Himself and not in what He can do for me is a struggle, but it is all the only secure hope that the suffering person can grasp onto. Everything and anything else provides no secure foundation. Anything else a person trusts in can fail or be taken away. Only Christ Himself is a secure refuge for the suffering person.If the reader is looking for help in trusting God to "work things out," then I wouldn't recommend this book. It will be just be a discouragement. But if you're looking for help in trusting in God Himself as your only hope in life, then this Book will be very worthwhile.
