If I've got this right Fenton believes Homo Sapiens did evolve in Africa and then migrated out of the continent to Europe, Asia, and finally Australia. Along the way inbreeding happened with Neanderthals, Denisovans, and anybody else along the way. Fenton also believes that all Homos could successfully interbreed. But not everybody did. Some interbred only with Neanderthals and some only Denisovans. Unfortunately there was a great volcano eruption, the worst in 2.5 million years, and everybody was wiped out save the residents of Australia who in time migrated back through Asia, Europe, and into Africa. Okay this doesn't make any sense. Well it gets worse. Seems the folks living in Tierra del Fuego are remnants of the first migration into the Americas. And I think Fenton feels they are somehow related to those folks formerly called Bushmen and some others in Australia.Well I think that's his thesis. I can't substantiate it though because the writing is so convoluted that I finally used paper and pen to try following his jumbled and unreadable text. Incidentally there are only 124 pages in this self published book and no index. I certainly can understand why no publisher would touch it. Incidentally Fenton notes that there are physical differences between today's races, e.g. blood types and tooth shape but finishes with the broad generalization that we are one species and one race. Seems there are some leaps of logic here. Europeans have some Neanderthal genes but no Denisovan. Huh? So how did. . .oh well, I quit. This is just a really bad book. I urge the dear reader to save his (her) money.

An interesting book with an alternate human popul ation stort. I found it interesting, but the dots between the different points of evidence were unevenly connected leaving the impression that there were holes in the arguments. The genetic data, for example, is interesting, but not conpelling without being more complete. The thin data ww have has explanations that differ from tjose presented in the book. I expect there are many elements of this theory that will survive the coming years and the Modified out of Africa theory may turn into the out of Africa, then back in, then out again as we get more nuanced reads of DNA >100K years old. A good value for the money. I didn't change the cores of my views after reading this, but a number of details in the peopling of the world seem like they will undergo refinement in the next decade.

I really admire people who have the patience to go through humungous amounts of data, take a fresh look at it and write a book about it. People tend to get stuck with paradigms given to them at one stage or other that are not necessarily accurate, and then move on with their lives without looking back or giving the matter another thought, thinking that the issue is solved. The same can be said about so many other “facts” given to us by scientists in other fields. We must always keep an open mind and keep examining data, otherwise we will never really know what really took place on this planet. Theories are not solid facts and data can be interpreted one way or another depending on the institution or people that brainwashed you. In the past few years I have gone through a huge revision of thought due to researchers such as the one who compiled and researched this data. I really enjoyed reading this book and have already tried to challenge one or two archaeologists that I know. They were reluctant as expected (archaeologists tend to dig their feet into the ground and automatically refuse anything that may change or challenge their world view). I don’t call that science but fear, and unfortunately there’s a lot of that going around.

Read this book for a contrast to the 'Out of Africa' concept of Sapien domination. Very well researched, conceptually accurate. A good read.

I’ve witnessed a slew of paradigm shifts in my life and career. The rise of the Internet and Amazon’s decimation of bookstores and retail. The shift from Madison Avenue brand advertising to online ad auctions like Google and Facebook. The fall of Neo-Darwinism and the rise of the extended synthesis and systems biology, which is going on right now and is every bit as tectonic as Amazon and Google. The taxi industry being clobbered by Uber. Watching records give way to CDs which gave way to Spotify and online streaming. Now we’re watching fiat currencies get clobbered by cryptocurrencies.I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall and how fast the iron curtain fell during the following two years, noting that Marxism seems to be back in universities; and a new generation that seems eager to re-create the genocides and mayhem of 100 years ago.You can rewind 80 years and look at how Godel’s incompleteness theorem clobbered logical positivism in mathematics. You can also notice that logical positivism is still pretty fashionable among the New Atheists. Even though Godel proved it false in 1931.I’m a student of such revolutions and I study them closely. And this is to say nothing of the mini-revolutions that happen inside of various industries, noticed only by insiders. One example would be the revolution that happened in networking on factory floors in the late 90s. I’ve been involved in dozens of such paradigm shifts.Every one of these revolutions was spurred by an OUTSIDER. Jeff Bezos, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Uber; Sony and Phillips with the CD and then Spotify; the new powers that took over the communist bloc countries and Kurt Godel; none of these were part of the good old boys club that had been defending the status quo. The old guard fought them all - tooth and nail. The revolution in evolution right now is being driven by Denis Noble, a physiologist; James Shapiro, a geneticist and student of McClintock; neither he nor she ever bought into the usual dogmas; and people from a dozen different fields like semiotics, cybernetics and information theory. The Royal Society meeting in 2016 that announced the revolution in evolution was co-hosted by the British Academy (all participants from the BA being outside of evolutionary biology); all this was done in defiance of hostile resistance from old-school Neo-Darwinists, who fought it pretty much the same way the taxi bosses have been fighting Uber: not in the lab, not with proof and evidence, but in City Hall.So any time a book comes along and offers to upend a current paradigm, I’m inclined to pay attention. Now of course 80-90% of the people who write such books are cranks. But when someone does have a possibility of legitimacy, there are telltale signs. Bruce Fenton provides such signs when he says:“Wherever possible, we focus on peer-reviewed scientific papers based on research guided by solid protocols, in almost all cases the scientific sources I have used can be considered mainstream authorities. There are a few instances where non-academics are my sources, but only where they offer unique insight into research that is itself accepted by the scientific community. The revised view of human origins on offer here is so radical that I could not risk undermining it by using potentially questionable sources, even where such sources appeared to provide a genuine revelation which would support this work.”That’s exactly what I looked for. When I began questioning the old-school interpretation of Darwinian evolution myself, I found that all the evidence I could possibly need to overturn the old paradigm was already available in huge abundance from the existing scientific literature. If you could do a search on Google Scholar and had some idea what you were looking for, you could find mountains of evidence. Many times all you needed was a different angle than everyone else inside the field. In my case for the book “Evolution 2.0” it was simply my background as a communication engineer and my professional experience with understand codes and coding systems. Aside from that it was possible to stick assiduously to well-confirmed, non-controversial facts to build the bricks of the case.It quickly became obvious that alternative models were available in abundance. Suddenly work by people like McClintock, Margulis, Jablonka etc came into sharp focus. And I found out those women were vigorously opposed by the good ol boys clubs; and because of this had been forced to articulate their views with great clarity and mountains of proof. (The most recent review paper in the journal "Biology" by James Shapiro has over 700 references. His 2011 book has 1100.) Lesson: Don't bring a knife to a gunfight. It seems that this is what Fenton has done. Now I must make the disclaimer that I am I have not studied anthropology or paleontology in detail and I’m NOT qualified to tell you whether Fenton is right or wrong. What I can tell you is that his approach is similar to other competent outsiders who critique academia with precision and care.A lot of people don’t seem to realize that because of the funding structures in science - with only a handful of organizations handing out almost all the money, and universities being intensely political places - that breaking lockstep with the majority is usually suicide for a scientist. Some people imagine scientists to be independent objective thinkers with generous luxuries of academic freedom. But scientists are human beings just like everyone else, subject to tribal behavior and prejudices. And because of the nature of peer review, where the “peers” are almost by definition defenders of some particular conservative status quo; because of tenure and funding; scientists therefore are subject to *enormous* peer pressure. Every scientist knows just how much they can afford to buck the system before they commit career suicide. If you’re going to break the paradigm you have to be of nearly rock-star quality. And it will probably take you 30 years to be taken seriously. The old adage “it’s not what you know it’s who you know” is even more true in science than it is even in business. Also what you will see with research scientist rock stars who have become “bulletproof” is that they display a markedly different stance towards traditional views. George Church from Harvard, for example, holds many views that differ from the mainstream, but he simply doesn’t care about the controversy because he has so many choices of projects and funding sources that it does not affect him. One can only admire the sense of detachment. So Fenton dares to ask the question: “When we examine hominids and neanderthals and genomes and skulls all over the world, does the evidence really tell a story that humans originated from Africa?”His answer is a resounding “no.” They came primarily from Australasia. And they got to Africa in boats - later. And furthermore, humans developed in independent populations around the world and re-converged in later years, merging the strength of all those disparate evolutionary paths back into a single population which became modern humans. He carefully traces the logic that leads to these conclusions, citing many many papers and DNA analyses and dates, such that his argument in the end appeals to common sense. Now again I might change my mind if I were to hear him cross-examined by people who espouse the out of Africa view. I don’t know. But what I can say is he’s made his case well and he doesn’t appear to be making anything up or stringing stuff together with duct tape.I do have a few criticisms. My 13 year old asked me to summarize the case he makes in the book and I had some difficulty doing it. Or course this could be my fault, but bullet point summaries piecing the key touchstones of evidence together at the end of various chapters would be helpful - especially if it was reduced to rock-solid essentials. The book has no graphics. Some pictorial diagrams or info graphics could be immensely helpful in simplifying the arguments. One has no difficulty imagining a power point slide that shows progressive layers of history, making Fenton’s arguments crystal clear and immediately persuasive.I also think the book is a little light in explaining the larger implications of changing the theory. Anytime theories like this shift, there are huge dominoes. Historical, philosophical and technological. I’m not clear what they are but I’m sure they are there. I also felt like I lacked understanding in what his personal story was. Something led him to do all this and feel it was important, and it’s probably not just the abstract truth. What was the motivation? It’s is often said that science proceeds one funeral at a time. It will be interesting to see how this new model fares over time, and what tables of money changers it may overturn.

I would only suggest this book if you have a lot of patience and determination to make sense of the authors code. The source code has bugs, and many many memory leaks. It isn't even formatted correctly. In order to make sense of it, I had to tab and format it correctly. Not fun. There are much easier ways to do animation than what the book describes. If you really want to know how X files work then get this book, otherwise skip it.

I buy this book because I can not find another book whit animation on direct x, but you need install the direct x sdk 9 to run the examples, and a good video card, if you not, show you many error of memory, in some cases this book are helpfully if you not have any idea how to made an animation or cloth simulation, I recommend this book for a start into direct animation, the book only help you to take a path to start into game develop, because are very hard to find a book how to show you made animations, there is many things and ideas you can save from this book to use like a guide for a start.

First of all the retail price of the book is too much. The last section (video on texture and cloth simulation) which he thinks are the most advanced are just pretty lame. He could have better described how to export a skinned mesh better. The ragdoll effect as given is not combined with an animated model making it a bit less useful. The book does cover a lot on using skeletal animation that was definately not covered in other books that I've bought on the subject. I'm also glad that it has no intro to DX section. PS: Who wrote the 5 star review, the author?

Advanced Animation with DirectX is not a good book at all. The author did a terrible job on the skinned animation parts and the later parts of the book is just plain bad. The beginning was ok but the code was not right. I tried to implement some of the stuff at the beginning and it didn't work. When I sat down and thought about the problem at hand and how to do it, I got everything working smoothly without using anything that was done is the book (which means the book was a waste of money). Who ever gave this book 5 out of 5 stars must be the author or a friend.

The timing of this book's release is unfortunate because Microsoft made huge changes to DirectX 9 during 2004. As a result, the code in this book is completely obsolete today.

If it weren't for so many incorrect

OK, I mostly enjoyed the first book (reminds me of The Librarians TV series). Yes, it's mostly for a younger audience, so I suspend belief for the sake of some, at times, outrageous entertainment. I enjoyed the characters and wanted to continue the story. However... This second book is becoming very tedious. The error rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The first book had some, which is sadly becoming the norm. (Doesn't anyone check their work before releasing it?) But I'm finding multiple errors per page in this one, which just doesn't let me immerse myself in the story. Not only are there various punctuation problems (missing beginning or ending quotes, Im instead of I'm...), within one paragraph he can't even keep straight which vehicle they are in. It's Beryl, it's Bertha, it's Beryl... (But, I LOVED the little twist with Beryl. I won't say what it is so as not to spoil it for others, but one of the modifications was just an absolute hoot!)So, a book that I should breeze through in a couple of hours is taking much longer because I keep getting brought up short (yes, I take notes & report errors). I haven't finished this one & I'm not sure I will. I know there's an update available on #3, so I may give that a shot, hoping they've fixed a bunch of errors. (But why not in the rest of the series?)Mr. Ashmore has a wild imagination. Cleaning up these books could really make for a 4.5 star read.Oh, and, I get that you're a Brit (which is the root of some of the things I stumble over), but, just for your education - they way you've drawn Bruce is SO wrong. Arizonans are nothing like that. You might want to make him from Texas & your characterization would be a touch more accurate. Most Arizonans don't wear cowboy hats, have no drawl, etc. (I should know - I've lived in AZ for over 30 years.)Please go back and proof/edit your work and release an update. It really has the potential to be enjoyable. (Though... I agree with what I saw someone else write about Becky getting a bit annoying.)---Oh! Almost forgot - the TOC is hosed, at least on my copy. It shows Cover, Chapter 2, End. Not particularly useful. Downloaded to both a K5 and PW & neither has a functional TOC. (Book 1 was fine) At the very beginning, there is a list of chapters, unlined as if they are links, but they don't work.---Edit 8/16Finished the book. Very tedious. SO many errors. Very disappointing. I used the PW's reporting feature to report a couple dozen errors, but there were at least that many more that I didn't report because it was becoming a chore. After all, why should Mr. Ashmore get free proofreading services? And, while this may be written for a young audience, one shouldn't be sloppy in plot or mechanics. I don't want to write any spoilers, but he finally treads into the problem (there's a name for it, but I can't recall it right now) where there's a scene that has evidence of something having happened, then something happens, but it then goes back in time & the older incident gets changed from a leap back, but that would mean the first thing never happened, sending someone back in time... I'm not explaining it well, but it's a circular paradox that couldn't happen. Time loop - that's the phrase. And, the more I read, the more I agree with a few others, Becky's really starting to annoy me. She's becoming a little prima donna that is acting like a spoiled brat and is getting away with it. If she were a few years older, she might be able to demand answers and things with a little more credibility. Obviously, Percy keeps caving to their wishes to be put in danger because this is a fantasy book for kids, so it's written for them to live vicariously. I get that. But, still...

Excellently paced and completely worthy successor to Time Hunters 1. We see the kids mature and grow up fast, as kids tend to do when approaching adolescence. The bond between the main protagonists, Uncle Percy, Becky, Joe and Will, deepens as they continue on their adventures travelling through time. We see an introduction of some loveable new characters (and some diabolical characters). As with Time Hunters 1 we see the amazing blending of historical fact and imaginative fantasy. Towards the end I was thinking "how are we going to get out of this one" and "please, don't leave us with a cliff-hanger". A highly satisfying ending that tied up all of the strands developed throughout this wonderful romping adventure. The characters are beautifully drawn, there is a balance between fun and real human drama, the plotting is meticulous and ingenious. While reading this book you'll chuckle and you'll tear up and you'll have to read just one more chapter. As Bob, the "female impersonator" in Blackadder Goes Forth says: "always leave them wanting more" and that's exactly what the author does. Now we have to wait for Time Hunters 3. Spewing (as kids used to say in Australia).Oh yeah, and also kids might like this book.

This book carries on from the first in the series, and is more or everything - more action, more thrills, more nail-biting, edge of the seat action, and an even more satisfying conclusion. The plotting is tight and has lots of unexpected twists and turns, in time as well as events, but it all comes together perfectly in the end. We see our old favourite characters, Becky, Joe and Uncle Percy, Will and the rest, plus some exciting new ones. The action moves to such diverse places as New York and the Caribbean and plenty of diverse times as well. There is a flavour of the Pirates or the Caribbean movies too - which adds to the fun.Altogether an excellent successor to book one and leaves us looking forward to the next installment.

I was reading this before I read it to my school age students for the summer program and I'm glad I did. A nice time traveling adventure story but with a little bit of profanity, nothing children probably haven't heard already but I didn't think it was necessary for a middle school level book of this type.

Another shining series that engages the young & the young of heart.5 stars for top value, great reads, great entertainment.I bought the first of the series from an ad-hoc flag via Kindle Buffet, consumed it & bought the 2nd without hesitation (no sampling needed). At the end of the 2nd, left still wanting for more, rinse and repeat upon realising the 3rd of the series was also already out there. The series "may" be a little (very little) predictable in parts but that's not necessarily a bad thing & made up for in equal or more parts of the unexpected. Great twists on some points of history & mythology. NOT in any way shape or form a time travelling norm of travel in time, get trapped & then endure a long drawn out possibly boring account of how to get back.Look forward to touching base "solidly" with the kids Dad; hope that is coming very soon in the series & can't wait for the next in the series; please keep them coming.

The GM: A Football life, a Final Season, and a Last Laugh, by Tom Callahan

Review

“It's a terrific narrative of the ebb and flow of a football season through the eyes of a general manager, Ernie Accorsi of the Giants. Accorsi, in his final season before retiring, gave Callahan access to everything he saw with the Giants last year, including the raw emotion that flowed from GM to coach. In so doing, Accorsi illustrated the real tension that exists in front offices, the kind you so rarely read about In the mainstream press. So don't think this is just a Giants book. It's not. It's an NFL book, and a book that helps you understand some of the complex relationships that define the game today.”—Peter King, Sports Illustrated“A vivid, focused account of a New York Giants season filled with hope but ultimately tainted by disappointment…Callahan also paints a wonderful portrait of Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, [filling] the book with wit, wisdom and great stories.”—Miami Herald“Callahan’s book about the last year of Ernie Accorsi’s reign as general manager gives unusual insight into how a football organization is run.”—Chicago Tribune“A fascinating look at an NFL season by a true insider. Great tidbits abound.”—Dallas Morning News“The most interesting and topical [of the recently published Giants books] by far. The author was given extensive behind the scenes access and emerges with many juicy tidbits…Callahan deftly handles a poignant chapter on trainer Ronnie Barnes’ role in Wellington Mara’s final days.”—Newsday“Many surprising revelations…shocking.”—New York Daily News“The G.M. is perhaps the best book ever written about a pro football executive…Accorsi is a terrific subject.”—Allen Barra, Washington Post Book World“THE GM is one of the great sports books to come along in recent years, and that's not just a tribute to Tom Callahan, who wrote it, but also to Ernie Accorsi, the book's subject. It says a lot about someone when they have the confidence and self-esteem to open their lives that completely for published consumption. Good for Ernie. Better for us.”—Mike Vaccaro, New York Post "A compelling chronicle of Accorsi's career written adroitly by Tom Callahan, who was allowed to be a fly on the wall of the Giants' inner sanctums during their tempestuous 2006 season." —Dave Anderson, The New York TimesFrom the Hardcover edition.

There were plenty of adjectives used to describe Tom Callahan's book, "The GM." The one that comes to mind is "much-anticipated."After all, it was said to be something of a diary about the final year of Ernie Accorsi. The New York Giants' general manager started his professional life as a sportswriter, and has always been considered one of the good guys in the business. Accorsi let Tom Callahan move into Giants Stadium and take over an office in 2006, a bizarre year if ever there was one. After actually reading the book, the description has to go from "much anticipated" to "slightly disappointing." While "The GM" has its good points, mostly in the form of interesting stories about the past, it doesn't come off as particularly memorable.Accorsi grew up in Pennsylvania, eventually working his way into pro football with the Baltimore Colts. He was around for the John Elway debacle, when the franchise QB forced a trade to Denver. Accorsi went on to a GM job in Cleveland and eventually New York. While in New York, Accorsi made the decision that he knew would make or break his legacy -- he traded a package of draft picks for the rights to Eli Manning. Accorsi thought Manning would be the franchise quarterback ever team needs to be great, and he was willing to go out on a limb to get him.Manning is one of the major characters of the 2006 season, but probably not the main one. That description goes to Tom Coughlin, the Giants' head coach. Coughlin won games in New York, but he wasn't exactly a "players' coach." The Giants limped down the stretch, partly because of a long string of injuries. Could they make the playoffs? Could they do anything once they got there? That's an interesting story, but it's not particularly Accorsi's. While the tension between coach and general manager is nicely portrayed in spots, Accorsi seems to exist in some sort of limboland, as his work day is never completely spelled out.Instead, we get interesting little stories about the team -- the trainer who spent a month with the dying Wellington Mara, the retiring future Hall of Fame running back who was leaving at the peak of his powers, an offensive lineman who refused to guess when it was time to leave so he kept playing. And the tension between a coach and GM is revealed when Accorsi starts raging over a decision to not let the Chicago Bears run out the clock late in the first half, a decision that proves costly when it eventually lets the Bears back in a game."The GM" probably works as much as you'd like it to work. Giants' fans certainly will enjoy some of the inside stories about the team, and pro football fans will find some meat here. But as for the subtitle, "The inside story of a dream job and the nightmares that go with it," that doesn't quite describe it. This book is relatively interesting, but also comes across as a bit of a missed opportunity for something better.

"The GM" is an interesting, albeit fairly short, story about Ernie Accorsi, who was until his retirement last year, the General Manager of the New York Giants and the longest serving GM in the sport. Tom Callahan, the talented author of several other sports books, was granted unfettered access by Accorsi to follow him and the Giants around throughout the star-crossed 2006 season. In the end, the book is not so much about the day-to-day duties of an NFL General Manager, as it is about the long football life and experiences of Accorsi, and the many fascinating people he met along the way.I think Callahan got a lot more than he had envisioned, as the Giants endured a massive collapse during 2006, falling from title contender to also-ran in a matter of weeks. But this book goes beyond chronicling a NFL season in turmoil, and is filled with hundreds of short stories and anecdotes from many conversations with Accorsi, who has spent a lifetime in the NFL. Accorsi's tales about his long tenure in the NFL are probably the best parts of the book. Throughout his career, Accorsi got to work with and learn some of the biggest names in the history of football: Johnny Unitas, Pete Rozzelle, Joe Paterno, Wellington Mara, and others.Part of what makes this book good is Accorsi's witty and humanistic retellings and Callahan's seamless writing and recounting. It is obvious that Callahan spent many hours just listening to Accorsi's great stories, and has sprinkled them liberally throughout the book with ease. Callahan is a great writer, and his descriptions of people, places, and events that have shaped football in recent history are a joy to read. I have heard from several people that his last book -- a biography of Unitas -- is fantastic, and after reading "The GM", I look forward to picking it up.Additionally, the book spends a great deal of time on the 2006 Giants, framing them of course as the final note of Accorsi's long career. Callahan spoke to Head Coach (and tyrant) Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning, Plaxico Burress, Michael Strahan, Jeff Feagles, and other Giants in delving into the Giants' collapse and exploring how the players coped with the losing and why they continued to play the game year after year. In the end, the Giants turbulent season -- they finished 8-8 and made the playoffs, but lost in the divisional playoff -- serves as a good metaphor for Accorsi's career: some highs, some lows, but a strong love of football always."The GM" is a really fun and quick read, though for just under 270 pages the price tag may a bit high for some. If you are interested in current pro football or just the history of the game, then I think you'll enjoy the book.Four stars.

This is a great read if your a fan of football, particularly if your a GIANTS fan. This book goes behind the scene and into the front office to see some of the intricacies of a professional football team. And more significantly it reveals some real surprises for NY Giants fans. If your a Giants fan you'll love this book. If your a football fan who wants to get a little more insight to what happens in the front office as well as learning a few interesting stories about past NFL history then you will enjoy this book. If your looking for X's & O's then don't bother it's about the human element of how a team is built not strategy.

It was very interesting reading about the "inside stuff" of being a GM of a major football team. GM Ernie Accorsi ran a great ship and was instrumental in bringing the Super Bowl Championship to NY and the NY Giants. This was a pleasant read especially if you are a NY Giant fan.
