I enjoyed the ideas in this book (though I really didn't learn anything new) and in general I liked that the author worked to make the science approachable. The author obviously loves language and finds ways to bring pop culture references in to help non-scientifically minded readers understanding. I do think that this will in the longer term give the book a "dated" feel and someday make it unreadable by younger audiences. The problem I had was that at times the author seemed to be more focused on finding cute ways to say things than on the ideas themselves. The biggest reason for this seemed to be to avoid scaring any unwary readers with "math" or "hard" science. The best example of this comes right at the end when the author talks about the Drake equation. Rather than just give the equation and tell what the variables mean (to me a wonderful way to understand how astronomy intersects historical sciences), the author mentions, almost off-handedly, a few of the variables and then only really explains the last one. In all, a good way to bring the science fearful into a basic understanding that could be nurtured into interest or even love. However, probably not a book for someone who has seen their way through less flowery, more information dense tomes.

The author has to be in the top 10% of all I.Q.s. The attempt to personalize "science and scientists" by cutesipie finishes to many major statements gets a little distracting after awhile. But, the points made and the education enhancement I received made putting up with her 'popular' writing style.

I am not generally a fan of non-fiction, and I have not yet finished reading this (I am half way through), but so far this is a very friendly, approachable book. While the information is not extremely "in-depth", it is at a level that I might recall later, and has the added bonus of being an uplifting and positive read.

Excellent book for anyone who was interested in science as a child and had it slowly leached out of them by the public school system. This book provides and starting point for the adult whose interest has been rekindled. Her writing is a bit facile, but it's still a great read.

Entertaining, enlightening, clever. Really terrific narrative that puts much of the science world in a pragmatic easy read. Atoms, molecules, space, energy, evolution....this book covers it all.

Sometimes the best explainers of a topic are outsiders or laymen, rather than practitioners in the field. The author isn't a scientist so she can still see complex topics from the layman's viewpoint. This is, simply put, a great book. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of science (what is the doppler effect?) but the philosophy behind science (why does the scientific method do such a good job at explaining our world?)The writing is breezy and not stilted, using metaphors instead of math to explain difficult topics. The chapter on evolutionary biology is my favorite, and covers not only the mechanics of evolution but the controversy, and explains the tenets (and bad reasoning) of the Intelligent Design movement. After reading this chapter it seemed like a veil lifted from my eyes, and I got excited and yelled, "I get it!"A couple of my favorite quotes:From the chapter on evolutionary biology: "Natural selection is the force that transforms drift and randomness into the gift of extravagance. It takes the doctrinaire sloth of the second law of thermodynamics, the tendency of every system to get frowzier over time, and hammers it into a magic, all-purpose, purpose-making machine that turns around and breaks entropy at the knees."From the chapter on astronomy, talking about the search for extraterrestrials: "We are such indefatigable telecommunicators that the world and its 6.5 billion content providers don't feel like enough, and we can't help but wonder, Who else can we call?"The book is wonderful and definitely is worth reading several times. My only gripes: there is the occasional reference to some current pop culture celebrity, and I think this will make an otherwise timeless book seem dated in a few years. Also I think that the book would have been enhanced by an occasional illustration. For instance, the explanation of the galaxies flying away from each other is much easier understood if you actually see a picture of a balloon with dots on it to represent the galaxies.

Natalie Angier's The Canon was... decent. I was excited to read it since I definitely don't have a healthy grasp on science. In the beginning, she does a pretty good job writing simply but without making you feel like an idiot.As the book went on, however, I began to get frustrated. She routinely works in cutesy little rhymes and sayings that started to drive me crazy. As the concepts dealt with became more complex, her penchant for the poetic was really irritating. She would be talking about... I don't know, atoms maybe... and she would say something like "the size of a bird or this word or all the nerds in class." Please remember you're writing for adults who are intelligent and choosing to further educate themselves about science. I don't want to be driven off by cute.In the end, I still think she didn't quite simplify some of the deeper concepts to a level I was really comfortable with. Maybe I am truly a science idiot, but I doubt it.Verdict: C-

I love her work. She's one of the best Science writers around. Well-informed, presents the info very well. She has a sneaky sense of humor that keeps me chuckling while I learn.

When I saw this interview on GMA, it got me interested but at the same time I thought "quitting your job to travel sounds crazy!" but honestly this book is much more than that. I read most of the reviews (even the bad ones lol) the positive ones won me over and I finally bought it, I should say this book has been sitting in my amazon wishlist forever! So I thought it was time to purchase and read it for myself. I should say I am not a huge reader, I honestly hadn't really touched a book since high school days (well that's a lie, I had to touch them again to pass college) but I have not been able to finish a book. I am terrible or I just have a short attention span. I have been following Kyle for awhile through instagram and his posts are beautiful! I actually finally got up the courage to shoot him a message (I was nervous ok??) about positivity and he's actually a super cool guy! So I suggest anyone to follow him.Anyway talking to him made the decision to get the book even easier! I purchased it a few days later after our short little convo and started reading it the day after I received it, I procrastinate. Something I need to fix but once I started to read it I couldn't put it down! There were parts I was literally in tears, my favorite pages are 43-44. I had read that page out loud to my grandma and we were both laughing hysterically. It was funny because we could be like "oh yeah that's totally us!" as I read this book, I found myself talking out loud, wether it was laughing or saying "oh no, I feel so bad for them" but laughing at the situation too. Life is never easy and this book shows that it can be a bit stressful.Him being a big Dan Brown and Harry Potter fan made it super enjoyable for me also! Literally Dan Brown's books are the only ones I have finished all the way through (besides this one). This book talks about more than "drinking" or "Ash going to Zara". He explains the sites, the headaches, stresses and how life is unpredictable. Everyone is going to have a different opinion about it but also who doesn't drink when they go on vacation? Don't lie, you do. For someone who hardly touches alcohol but twice a year. I drink when I would travel somewhere also, you're there to have fun and enjoy your time.Kyle also explains that he was the one worried about how they would survive on the expenses coming back from their trip, he explains several times "if they made the right choice" but to me is life is too short and you never know when it's gonna end. So what if you're in your 20's and you decide to do something crazy like this. That's the point of life. After reading this for a day and a half, I felt more inspired to get out of my comfort zone. I decided to drop off my social media for a couple days and give it to myself with no distractions. The passed two days not being on instagram has proven to be somewhat stressful (I check more than 10x a day) and great at the same time! I have found my passion to start working on my book I started over a year ago, workout, pamper myself. People today rely so much on social media to entertain themselves they forget life passes by like that.I also love the message of the book "not afraid of the fall", I always go by a saying "keep moving forward". I still live by that quote today and will live by this new one also. I am in a wheelchair, so it's always hard to stay positive and look forward but this book has helped lift my spirits a bit and I am going to recommend this to everyone I know!Overall this book is great and I enjoyed every second of it. If you love to travel, want to do something new, get out of your comfort zone, whatever! It's up to you to decide what you want to do with your life, the first step is to do it. Great job Kyle for a great book!

I came across Kyle's book shortly after suddenly losing my husband. It came at the perfect time because I was beginning to retreat into a solitary place and became fearful of doing any of the things I loved because my husband wasn't at my side to catch me when I fell. Unfortunately, in my story, I was always the hesitant one and my husband was the one wanting to jump off cliffs and travel without a map. I was the "sensible one" who always had an excuse and a reason NOT to go and he was the one who bought the airline tickets and THEN told me we were going on a trip! And then, suddenly, it was too late.Although this book involves a couple, the very premise reminded me that my own love story isn't over and that there is so much more of life that NEEDS to be lived. Kyle does a beautiful job of telling their story and with every adventure, I could feel the adrenaline and desire to travel stir inside me. This book gave me permission to be brave, made me fearless about the fall and taught me to LEAP. An exquisite read!

I could not put down this book! It was a fantastic read that gave a great, fresh view of traveling. The author did an incredible job bringing the reader into the journey (emotionally and visually) From the beginning to the end, I felt like I was on the journey with them; I felt their struggles and their triumphs. The descriptions and comparisons made it easy to visualize what the couple was seeing. This book not only shows how you can affordably travel, it is also just a good story. The book is easy to follow and has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments! I was so sad when I finished the book but so happy I read it. This has become one of my favorite books and I look forward to reading it over and over again. If you are thinking about purchasing this book, DO IT! If for nothing else, then to learn how to not be afraid of the fall.

*Real, honest review* I CANNOT stress enough how incredibly great this book is! I took a similar 35-day solo trip through Europe and have not stopped traveling sense, so I am always on the lookout for stories from people who have traveled because I truly enjoy hearing the different experiences they had. This book did that and so much more. I laughed out loud, found myself deep in thought, got a little teary-eyed, and completely fell in love with Kyle and Ash's story. Even if you haven't taken a super long trip - or maybe you've been debating on whether or not you should take a certain trip - Kyle's style of writing and storytelling will spark a sense of wanderlust you never knew you had. More than that though, he touches on the fact that too many people get bogged down in their online or social media presence without truly experiencing what's right in front of them. I am guilty of this myself. So when people see the stunning Instagram photos or sponsored travel blog posts, all you are really seeing is the final product; you're not seeing all of the messy, uncoordinated or failed attempts it took in order to get to that spot and produce that image or blog post. Not all traveling is pretty and smooth sailing, and that is perfectly fine. In fact, that's where a lot of the best stories come from. Not Afraid of the Fall gives you a refreshingly raw and real glimpse of what it truly takes to travel like that, but also marries it incredibly well with his beautiful experiences. This is an addictive, sports romance with a forbidden element that I had a hard time putting down, but longed for a more involved conflict.Seventeen-year-old Annie and her father move to Kansas City after he's hired to be the pitching coach in charge of training an up and coming rookie, Jason Brody. Sparks fly between Annie and Jason but they must keep their relationship a secret. Annie's father isn't well-liked by the team's owner; he's looking for any indiscretion to can her father and force them back to Arizona.This is definitely a more mature young adult novel. I'd even go as far as to say it's more new adult. It straddles the line here. What I really liked about this novel was the slow development of Annie and Brody's friendship and then relationship. Julie Cross really did a great job with building their relationship, which made me feel totally connected to their love story. Both of them tried to fight their feelings but couldn't stay away and I always love experiencing that tension.In addition to the romance, I really liked the great father-daughter storyline. Annie and her father have a healthy and strong relationship. This was refreshing since often in young adult familial relationships are often a source of strain or turmoil.I also liked the development of Annie and Brody as individual characters, with their own unique backgrounds and histories that shape why they make the decision they make. I felt like I had a good grasp on who they were as people. Annie discovers that Brody has a past that he tries to hide but also one that causes him pain. Over the course of the novel, the trust the develops between them deepens, allowing Brody to confide in Annie.Like I said earlier, this novel is a more mature young adult novel (arguably new adult). The author doesn't shy away from exploring Brody and Annie's sexual relationship, which is nice because, newsflash, teenagers have sex! But what I liked in this book was that neither character talked about sex in a flippant or careless way. It wasn't romanticized or watered down, and was discussed in a way where it was clear both understood the importance of their decision.What didn't entirely work for me was the conflict in this story. It in honesty, the conflict felt flimsy and superficial, which is a bummer because I really felt the rest of the story was quite strong overall. But for me, I really like a strong realistic and authentic conflict and I didn't get it here. As much as I loved the romance, I wish we would have had more exploration with Annie's friendships and life at school. The novel focuses so much on the love story. The only thing I know about her at school is that she plays track and she has one friend—Lenny, whom she met because she's a Royals kid too. I also wish that Lenny's story was more nuanced and fully resolved here.As a Kansas City native, I've had this book on my to-read list almost since its release in 2014. Books rarely take place here so it's a special treat when your hometown makes an appearance in literature. There were a few inaccuracies with the location of certain things but it really wasn't that big of a deal to the overall story, just something I noticed as a local.If you're looking for a sweet and swoonworthy young adult sports romance, then seriously give this book a try. It has plenty of moments to make you go weak in the knees with a family story that will make your heart grow 3 sizes.

This was a really great book. Annie Lucas is a 17 year old who moves from Arizona to Missouri with her father for his job. Before she was born, her father played one Major League baseball game but then he had cancer and lost one of his legs because of it. So he's been working in a factory since and his wife and Annie's mother is too interested in chasing fame to be there for her family. Annie's father returns to major league baseball as a pitching coach and he's there to help the Royals new rookie pitcher. Jason Brody is 19 years old and he's a temporary pitcher but hopes to stay in the major leagues and not be sent back to the minor leagues. Her father spends alot of time with Brody and Annie and him become somewhat friends.Annie is a strong woman who has had to mature pretty quickly. She lives with her father and her grandmother who has alzheimers. Her mother has never been motherly or shown much caring to Annie or her father. All that woman does everytime she leaves is make her father hurt and damaged. She's pretty responsible but she still follows her Landon into some trouble.Jason Brody is a good guy but he's made some mistakes in his past and feels like he is bad news. His family kicked him out and he got into some trouble. But he's trying to do better and he cares about Annie and doesn't want her to get into trouble.This book is definitely worth reading.

Whatever Life Throws at You was so refreshing. It gets back to the YA roots of stories that I loved when I was a teen. Admittedly, it was a little bit unrealistic - what typical 17 year old girl catches the eye of an up and coming hot baseball player? But sometimes the best part about reading is that the stories are a little unrealistic. Stuff like that doesn't happen in real life which is why reading is so great.Anyway, getting back to this story, I loved that it was told just from Annie's POV and even more than that, I loved Annie. She was smart, fun and confident. She was competitive and sure of herself (for the most part) - nice to see a heroine that is awesome and she knows it. Annie accurately portrayed a real 17 year old girl and I loved that.Aside from Annie, the secondary characters made this that much better. I really enjoyed Lenny - she was definitely a little bratty, but she was a good friend to Annie and that's all that really matters. I secretly hope that she gets her own book :)And of course how could you not love Brody? Hands down my favorite part was watching he and Annie interact - the little jabs and joking around. The build up to their first kiss was awesome and I loved that Cross didn't rush it. It was a treat to watch their relationship develop from friendship to romance.My second favorite part was that though Annie and Brody had their issues, Cross managed to keep the overall story on the lighter side of things. It didn't weigh the story or take away from things developing between Annie and Brody.Hands down this is one of my favorite YAs of the year.

On the recommendation of another author, I purchased Elizabeth Calwell’s book, began it at home, and finished it today on a flight. When two flight attendants heard me laughing in 18D they asked what I was reading. When I showed them the cover they took a photo of it and said they were going to order a copy for themselves. Caldwell captures her profession beautifully, and writes about some in-flight and on-the-ground events that will make the reader think, smile, and even laugh out loud. She certainly caused me to want to read another of her books.

Don’t we all love to laugh? This book provides ample opportunity to laugh until you cry. It is completely entertaining and difficult to put down once you begin reading it. This book would be an excellent movie vehicle for Reese Witherspoon as Elizabeth. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Just finished reading, Dear Passenger. It’s fun, witty, filled with Southernisms, and heartwarming. It also gives us passengers an inside track on what our friendly flight attendees deal with on a daily basis, but with Elizabeth's humorous perspective and positive outlook on life - her optimistic spin is contagious.In short, Dear Passenger is a light-hearted read, fast paced, and enjoyable. I smiled and even laughed out loud more than once reading her book and I think you will too. Great job Elizabeth! Great read!

This is a great book, especially for someone (like myself) who did a lot of air travel. The perspective of the crew is interesting and entertaining. Some of the anecdotes are priceless.

Elizabeth's first book is a delightful collection of easy-reading short snapshots that span her decades of experience as a flight attendant. From a new way to get grandma to her funeral to calming fights between passengers, Elizabeth's wry sense of humor kept me smiling, if not downright laughing. I can see where this book would be a great choice for those unpredictable airport delays . . .

This description of passengers' behavior from the flight attendant's perspective is hilarious! Air travel can be exhausting and frustrating, but at least I only have to take care of myself and my family members during travel. If you are a parent or teacher, you will really appreciate Elizabeth's struggle to maintain a cheerful disposition during her flights. Buy this book if you want a good laugh.

Elizabeth Calwell's book is interesting and fun read. Packed with vignettes of her career, this books lets the reader see inside the sometimes not so routine world of a flight attendant. Her vignettes are well written and demonstrate her ability to capture the hilarious real-life events she witnessed. Well worth the read and the narratives will stretch your assumptions about how people act in the air. Well worth the read.

Hilarious. Just arrived yesterday and I read half of it by last night. I was a very frequent flier and loved hearing about the insanity of airline travel from the perspective of an experienced flight attendant. Elizabeth’s deadpan style and wit make this a fun read.

Wonderful book to gain better understanding of just why the church is important to God and why we should respect and love the church as well. With so many, Christians and non Christians alike critical of the local Church this book is helpful in giving scripture and narrative for right thinking for Believers.

This book is super helpful in redirecting perspective on what church is supposed to be and how you know you're in the right place or encourage you to get into the church. If you truly claim to follow God you need to be in a church, a good church. This book is a quick read that will encourage and motivate you to do that! Blessings. (I read it in two days)

I have been in full time pastoral ministry since 1989. I have shared many of these ideas and concepts with people along the way. Joshua captures this most important subject in this easy to read book. I think every Christian would benefit from this instruction.

I would recommend this book to people who are having a hard time figuring out why should they go to church. They will find in this book various passages as to what to look for in a church. And how they can get to know God if they don't already know Him and how they can get to know Him in depth through his word.

I approached this book rather skeptically, wondering if the latest church fads were going to be overly defended all in the name of seeker friendly. I was pleasantly surprised. This book looks at Scripture with insight and points the way to seeing the church through God's eyes. If you are searching for the Biblical purpose of the local church, I highly recommend this book.

I tend to read too fast, just get me to the point. This book slowed me down. Thank you for this book Pastor Harris. It is the fourth in a series that the Holy Spirit is taking me through. "Not a Fan" by Kyle Idleman, "Radical" by David Platt, and "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas.

We used it as a project for our small group. It was a great read.

I have found this book to be a wonderful reminder to love what Christ loves. I love my family, sports, my country but the church I had become comfortable with and I haven't really worked on our relationship. I would encourage each Christian to read this book and quit dating the church.

My little guy has been having trouble lifting off. These books have helped him in his learning to read journey significantly. We bought 5 sets and every day we read a box full. Reading one box a couple of days in a row to begin with helped (nice to feel confident, since he did just read them the day before). There are a few sentences that would be more natural written another way and before we're done I will have added a few things to them. The illustrations are nice and the repetition helps with memorizing the words. Would highly recommend this books to teach reading. The added story cards to this set are nice! My son likes to make up his own nonsensical stories when he's finished reading the books.

I bought these for my 5 year-old who really struggles with confidence in the reading department. Everything was hard for her and she became afraid to even try to learn and decode sight words. These books were a game changer! Knowing that she could read a WHOLE BOOK with minimal or no help gave her the confidence boost that she needed in order to begin decoding sight words at school, and in a very short period of time. I cannot put into words how grateful I am that a teacher-friend recommend them to us. It seriously may have made the difference in whether or not we repeated Kindergarten and it made her love learning to read.

This is a good start to reading. As an adult you may look at them and think "There is no real story here" or "This seems a bit too simplistic" but when your young reader is just starting to sound out words these books are great. After spending an entire school year in kindergarten my son was still having issues with his sight words. That is when I decided to buy the BOB book series. My son enjoys sitting down to read his books every night. He actually brings them to me and asks if he can read now. As a mom that was worried about retention this is a huge plus.I think it may already be time to buy the next sets in the series. As long as they are as good as this set we will be a forever BOB customer.

During our reading time, I had a hard time to get my son's attention on the words of books. Most of the time he only liked to focus on the colorful pictures and scanned quickly at the word lines. So it's difficult to teach him reading and remember even the simple words. I gave Bob books a try and so glad that I picked it, since now the little boy has really focused on the words and learned them quickly, yay! The simple drawing of the books are intentional to withdraw the little ones' attention from the animated pictures, that's the main point. The only thing need to be improved is the connection between the word and the pictures. Sometimes my son can guess it based on the pictures like dog, cat, bird, bug without really learning the words. But it's helpful and effective to learn sigh words. I would strongly recommend these books for the very beginning reader to build up their confidence in reading.

Man oh man does my son LOVE reading these! He feels soooo proud of himself when he can pick up a book and read it from front to back. Best part was watching him do it with my mom ;-) Could it get to be too simple in a few more months? Sure....but he's already reading then, isn't he??

My son loves these so much he just pulls them out on his own. He loves that he's learning these words in class and gets excited when he is able to read them. This boosts his self-esteem and gets him excited about reading. Which is what we want! :) Cute little stories too.

Bob Books definitely met my expectation and my growing reader - 5-year-old - loved it. I love the simplicity and clarity of the pictures matching the sight words. Each page has an illustration, which at this level is so important for readers to see. My son loves reading these books using his Kindle. A cool feature is that readers — particularly those using reading glasses — can make the font larger by double tapping the screen. I personally prefer hard copies, but I don’t regret this since the product is less expensive than hard copies and we are also running out of room in the kids library.
